Wow, houses are so cheap elsewhere.

So just an update... We put an offer in again on that first house.

Well it looks like we are closing escrow next week.

Thanks guys. Were doing some work before we move in. I'll try to put up some before, during and after pics.

Nope, after we close but before we move in. It's a BAD idea to do any work on a house that you don't own yet. ;)

Haha thanks.

Actually, I'd say yes and no to the big debt. With our equity from selling our town home we were able to pay off all other debt, so I will only have my student loan and the mortgage. So yes, it's huge debt, but still not really. I'd rather have the big debt of a mortgage than throw away money on rent. In the next year or two the house will probably get paid off too, I can't say more than that now.

Update for anyone keeping track, we closed escrow on the first house in this thread and he moving truck is coming tomorrow. We've been staying with my in-laws now for almost 2 months. I can't wait to get moved in and settled..

Thanks.

We moved in this weekend. All went well. We started construction on the kitchen (replacing the lighting with cans/LEDs, adding similar lighting in the eating area and family room. Also cutting an opening from the eating area to the family room, having power and bracket run to put my tv above the fireplace, and gutting/replacing the second bathroom upstairs.

It'll be up living here while they are working but it's still better than living with the in-laws.

So here's a few pictures of the progress. Here's the upstairs guest bathroom, I will update this as they make progress.

Vanity and mirror removed and shower doors removed. Notice the broken soap dish and the gross bath tub.
Image

And here the toilet was removed and the tub was removed and replaced with a new one. The tile is started. Shower head moved up. Also flooring was removed.

Image

Image

Image

Flooring is done. It's a tile that looks like wood. Obviously you don't want to use wood in a bathroom. It will look nice once it's all grouted.

Image

Image

Ok, so here it is 90% done...

And here are the new lights going in to the kitchen...

And done...
Image

They still did caulking around the lights. We had to get a dimmer installed because the 5 lights were too bright. If we went with less then it would have looked funny.

And the family room. The mirror will come down and the tv is going above the fireplace. We will eventually redo the fireplace but it's not in the budget for now. Lights are going in the ceiling there too.

The wall that was opened up is almost done. It opens he rooms up so much. Since this was a supporting wall they used a huge header and the 4x6s all around the opening to make sure it was well supported. I wish I had snapped some shots of the framing. No shortcuts taken here.
Image

Image

Here we are mostly done...
Image

Image

Image

And the pantry that we never had...
Image

And pretty much done...

Nest...the wall is not yellow, I had bad lighting...

I updated again. They actually finished tonight but we were too tired to take new pictures again. I'll update tomorrow with the final shots.

Recap:
Bathroom got gutted and redone
Hole got cut in to wall between dining room and family room
Family room got mirror removed and Tv put up over fireplace
Lights were installed in kitchen, dining room, and family room.

We also replaced the master bath toilet with a new efficient dual flush toilet. No need for pics, we all know what a toile looks like.

Looking very good....did you make sure a proper header was build over the opening? Am pretty sure who ever did it, framed the correct load bearing header. But it sure is looking way better, that guess bathroom was horrible...not anymore.

Hey Ricky, I should have snapped some pictures before they added the drywall, but yes I think they used 4x8 or 4x10 above and below and then they triped the 2x4s on the sides. That looked more so than I've seen in a while.

Thanks for the compliments. The bathroom was horrible, I wouldn't trust the bath to have my son use it. The built in soap dish was broken off with a sharp piece sticking out.
