Mazda 929 Install

Post by Tiger »

I've had my audio gear just sitting patiently under my bed for a while. (Collecting dust... also recently sold a few other items to fund me purchasing some extra goodies)

My plans for now are as follows:

Headunit: Alpine CDA7998R Phantom Face (the 1.5 DIN copper chassis units)
Image
Image
Image

Speakers: These are the old Philips GTM series splits which have never seen use. I took the tweeters out of the equation and I replaced them with Vifa XT25 tweeters. I grabbed the 6.5" of 2 pairs of GTM1750 splits I had and I have 3 pairs of GTM1050 4" splits. So I've grab one pair and I'm considering possibly using the other 2 sets for rear fill or something. Who knows. But here's the front stage as it stands:

Image
Image
Image

All speakers will be run actively.

Amplifiers: Currently in my possession are 2 x Alpine MRV-1507 2 channel amps. (1 per sub) I also have an Alpine MRV-F407 on hand. I'm chasing down a set of MRV-T757 amps for my front stage (1 for the mids, 1 for the tweeters) I'll most likely use the F407 for the 4" midranges and hook up a set or rear fills too . I love my old school Alpine V12 amplifiers... solid works of art, they are.

Subwoofers: Phoenix Gold Xmax 12" V.2 x 2 (I'd love a 3rd one... but 2 is plenty... for now) :p

Now, I have since sourced the following:

Phoenix Gold Bass Cube
Phoenix Gold DD5
Alpine CHA-S634 MP3 Stacker

The car this is going into?

Image

Image

The car is at the mechanics getting the starter motor done to it. Once it's back, the install WILL begin. However, I've taken pics of boot layouts and with what I have so far, an idea for a boot layout is this:

Image

I could lay it out like this if the other T757 amps appear....

Image

I can put each t757 on either side of the F407. I'll suss all this out when I get the car back.

When I got the car registered, I then had to do the MUST-DO immediately...
Old Wheel:

Image

New Wheel:

Image

Image

Also..... I was tossing up as to where I should fit my stacker. I was thinking to stretch out the cord and just fit it in the boot... HOWEVER... I also considered another option :)

Glovebox Install:

I got excited because I thought to fit the stacker and see what clearance I had....

Image

Image

D'OH!!!!

Image

So I just need to take out a little bit from the back to make it fit... or... glass up a new glove bax that can accomodate a stacker in there :)

As it stands now, I just managed to take out the old head unit and leave a gap like this:

Image

I have to modify the bracket, in order for it to accomodate the new head unit.

But that's where it stands SO far.... more later...

Nice, I love those old V12 amps! Are you planning a false floor or are you giving up your boot?

Your car reminds me of my old beige 1985 Corolla. God I miss that car

Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for these amps. My first loves :P It's the only reason as to why I haven't gotten PG amps in there. However.. I'd LOVE to get me some Titaniums..... but all in good time. For now, I'll work with what I have.

I'm going false floor. There's PLENTY of room on these floors :)

HAHAHA! 1985 Corolla? Meh.. Poor man's Merc! :P

rather then having the smaller amp above the two larger ones, why not put it below them in the spare tire well? You are obviously loosing acccess to it with all 3 of those amps, stack them either on plexi or metal/wood frames and give the install some depth rather then everything flat and straight.

How big is the stock alt?

Well, I think I've just sourced another 4 channel and 2 channel. So.. more amps to the equation. Now, the reason why I wouldn't rack the amps is because the spare wheel is to the left of the boot and not underneath. So floor space for me is NO problem :) I could even make an amp mounting to go in front of the spare wheel and copy he mount on the opposite side to produce an assymetrical install in the boot. I will lay them all out once they all come to surface. (AND if I ever get my car back from the damn mechanics  )

The alternator is a factory fitted 70A. Apparently, Ford come out with a 110A Alternator that can be adapted to a Mazda 929. That's one avenue. Or, I'll save my bikkies up for an Iraggi Alternator (200A).

Battery in mind.. Kinetik. I'm in talks wih Pat from Kinetik now to find a way to bring them into Australia PROPERLY! I'm dyoing to try these batteries out.

Is your steering wheels on the wrong side!? :D

Love the Alpine CDA7998 HU, I ran one in my Mustang for years. Never seen a copper chassis one though. Nice piece.

HAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, it is! :p And thanks :)

I believe all the Aus released 7998Rs were copper chassis. Tough units. I'd LOVE to get either the Alpine F#1 Status head units or the Clarion HX-D2 (only shattering thing about the Clarion is no mp3s) Ah well.

This has been a slow mover, but I'm getting my windows tinted before I contemplate doing ANYTHING else. I've heard of the amount of waterworks they guys use when installing the stuff, so they can make their mess, then I'll clean up and start the install properly. I managed to feed the 0g power cable in tonight. Hopefully I get my headunit back from Alpine Australia about mid week. (Getting the FRONT rca preouts changed over to the original green ones, and replacing the power loom). Also, expecting a DD5 to show up on my doorstep anyday now (to sit next to my basscube on the parcel shelf).

That's it for now, I'll start putting install pics up once the windows got done and I actually make a start on the doors or the boot :)

To add to the boot, I've acquired a few more amps... another MRV-1507 (making it 3), an MRV-F409 for my midbasses (the F407 will do tweeters and midranges), and an MRV-F303 (to run my rear fill).

That'll make my amp collection complete. I'm either sourcing 3 or 4 PG Xmax 10s,; if I cannot get them, I may consider Oz Audio Matrix Elite Dual2 10s. If THAT fails.... I'll stick to my Xmax 12s.

I am thinking (as I'm not exactly running big midbasses) that there isn't a requirement for 12s really. I have heard these 12s fired up and they were awesome. However, they were coupled with the Dynaudio System 360 3 ways splits (8"-3"-1"). I'm only using 6.5"-4" and tweeter. Anyway... whilst my amps/DD5/head unit are on their way to my front door.. I'm weighing up all my sub bass options :) Times like this.. car audio sh/ts me. TOO MANY OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM... and not enough cars to fulfill them options/dreams! :p

Update:

The unit come back from Alpine with the following:

Image

Mmmmm.. new "Front" RCA pre-outs.

Image

They actually supplied me with a CDA7969 power loom, but they still run the exact same wires/pins. So it's all gravy :D

Image

And YES.. the unit face sounds MUCH quieter sliding in and out! These units unfortunately like getting louder the older they get!!

Here's the standard head unit. I have to laugh at the 929 sales brochure's description of the stereo:
THE SOUND OF THE FUTURE

Another enjoyable feature on this new Mazda V6i is the superb 6 speaker audio system. This system contains stereo AM/FM radio, electronic tuner, hig power amplifier, graphic equaliser and cassette deck.

All of these components are especially blended to offer the ultimate in listening and driving pleasure....
... yeah... about that... hahahaha

Now, I put the unit in back into place and this is how it sat...

Image

Image

I THEN noticed the face wasn't being allowed to go all the way back... so MORE mods needed!!!

Image

DOH!!!

Image

Second attempt (to make it adjustable)... STILL no good.. new holes needed!

Image

This WORKED!!!

Image

Image

Image

Now it slides out fully, no dramas. Unfortunately, I have that small opening up top. Once my cup holder drawer comes in from Autobarn, I'll fit it all, see how it looks and then perhaps look at glassing the fascia as a whole.

Not long after this was done, I had a delivery...

My Alpine 4 Channel MRV-F303. This is my rear fill amp.

Image

Image

When I gutted this thing, I had to look twice. I thought "This does NOT look like the F407 guts! Something suss here." Then I saw the following in the top LHS corner...

Image

Aswell as the massive "typical Alpine" caps.

Compare sizes of the F407 and the 1507 and the newly acquired F303

Image

This is my current V12 collection to date :)

Image

I might just start the Phase 1 "ghetto" install WITHOUT using the rear fills as yet. I'll install the rear fill but leave the wires in tact to hook up to an amp in a heartbeat. I'll just run my fronts and the subs so I have SOME sound for now :) I'll wire the 6.5" mids off the F303 and the F407 should be enough to run the midranges and the XT25s.

Now, BOOTSKIS layout....

Image

Now, excuse the Avantgarde amp, that's in there for measurement sake. Eventually that's where the other F407 will sit. I will just house the 2 x 4 channels on that line for now... then once the next amp comes along, I'll fit the F303 in between the 2 x F407s

Image

Here's the same shot is with ANOTHER F303 in there (shocking.. I know. That's why I never pursued a career in computer graphics design :P) But you get the idea! hahaha

Image

Image

OK, now that I have I have my boot layout organised... time to draft things up and get ready to build them up.

These are my little goodies for the boot. 4 x rifle-bearing cooling fans and a pair of Stinger distros. (1 x 0g into 3 x 4g outputs).

Image

Specs on the fans are:

Material: plastic
Bearing type: rifle bearing
Rotation speed: 2000RPM
Acoustical noise: 25 dB(A)
Airflow: 32.11CFM
Rated voltage: 12V
Max Input current: 0.20A
Size: 80 x 80 x 25 mm
Cable length: 27cm
Color: clear
LED color: blue

Image

About these distros, I need to purchase another distro that Stinger has, which can allow me to have a single 0g input and split into 2 x 0g outputs, and then distribute the 4g wires to each amp via these distros :)

The other distro I had in mind for this "operation" was this one:
