And So It Begins.........Again...

Post by Wrennagade »

Well my Phriends, I promised my two XS's+Cap to my buddy as payment for painting my house & figured I would temporarily put some gear in until I started my next build. Well after a few days I decided I'd rather not have such nice gear riding around unbolted in a rather dismal manner. :? So, I figure why not start a huge expansive project because I have no time to do so!

The wife just ordered a Shuriken BT60 for me (hope that will suffice), I just ordered 20' of hyperflex 0 gauge power+4' of 0 gauge gnd wire. I'll be putting the following into the subie:

Reactor, Ti1200.1, DD10, Ti BassCUBE, & possibly TLD66.

I'll keep using my Memphis comps & 3-ways for now & add my EliteD 12'' + a Clarion 10''(for mid bass)

I am thinking of using a spray sound deadener on the entire back as Dynamat is not within my budget. I have a few roll of Dead Liner but am saving those for the future 4Runner install

Got my 0g wire today, not bad as far as flexibility for the price (ebay) & got the back rattle canned with some sound deadening spray. I'll start on the side enclosures soon, I'm going to match they're color with the gray trim. :D

I hope you're installing them in stereo in the front, otherwise you are going to draw the soundstage to the back of the car and cause cancellations with the Elite. Not ideal.

Yeah, I'm holding off on the tens for now. I have the spare wheel well all taped off but wondering if the space will be to large for the EliteD 12 as I'll be utilizing all of it :hmm: ...what do you guys think?

You'd have to install it inverted.

Mounting depth for a start I'd say, unless you're building upwards from the wheel well too.

make a frame to go around the outside of the glass and then you have the option of flush-mounting the sub from the back for a smoother look. Just make the entire top removable.

Elite is going to need a double stack of 3/4 MDF or 1" at bare minimum! It's a fucking monster!

:) Well the glassing is coming along nicely, since I'm practicing patience & not rushing through my install it's going to take some time. I added braces to reinforce the sides & will be squaring up the sides with some slats hopefully tomorrow to help the MDF top fit evenly.

as long as those dowels are I would have gone thicker or tried to stabalize the center of them with smaller pieces.

I figure the enclosure being in the well will stabalize it overall, these are there to keep the fiberglass from bending out of shape while it is out of the car & being worked on. My other fiberglass box was bent out of shape some & didn't fit as molded when I put it into it's spot...had to pound the well in some & force it into place! Didn't want that happening again, the MDF & car should brace it pretty damn good.

do you mean you are going to add more layers outside of the car? It does look a little thin but I would get it as thick as you want it too be while its in the car. Each time you add a layer it can pull/shrink the existing shape.

It's about 3 to 4 layers thick right now. I've used 1+1/2 mat packs, 1+2/3 cloths & almost an entire gallon of resin. I was thinking this should be thick enough, but it's only my 2nd attempt at fiberglassing so you think it should be thicker?

For a sub enclosure I'd say 3 to 4 layers is a good starting point. Mine is around ½" thick (including an ⅛" layer of coremat) and braced heavily. Maybe a bit OTT, but then so is the sub you're using (mine's for an IDmax 12).

I build mine to the point that I know I can stand on it and not have to worry about it. To build thicker layers this is where its better to use the kitty-hair style. just tear off handfulls and soak them, use a roller to get the air out of it.

the stuff I am talking about is white, and random sized/placed strands that are cut and pressed into a sheet. its easy just to tear off a handfull at a time, put it where you want it and then saturate it with resin.
