two members of the" boomcarclub bollenstreek."

Post by nico boom »

here's something two of my friends build; leffert and arthur took a fiat panda; one of the smallest cars you can buy, and then...
poured in a concrete floor, fitted a 5cm. thick, braced front windsheeld, bolted the doors down, and fitted it with..
28 X 10"WOOFERS, AND 14 AMPS, 7X 2 VOLTS BATTERY , AND A OUT-OF CAR- HEAD UNIT.[by that time it they had to get it on a trailer to every show]
it produced only 158,7 db, but set a new standard of what was possible in such a small car, at the time.
leffert died after a car-crash some years ago.
he had build more installs than anyone in the club, with his never-ending energy. sometimes he worked NON STOP for two days to get it ready in time, building a install in a VAN, with the same amount of woofers as mentioned above, and 8 x 6x9 speakers in EACH door, to go with it, also he build a rock-type of enclosure that filled a whole car, with running water, and a fish-bowl...
I'll try to find those pics, we always laughed until our jaws hurt with him.

that's really cool Nico, thank you for sharing. I have heard of this before, but why do they use concrete to build with ?

Thats rock solid. This is what you want in a dB-drag car. more material that vibrate, lower sound pressure...

It's like trying to pressurize a balloon with a given amount of air; because of the material expanding you won't get any real pressure inside.
When the same amount of air is forced into a rigid object, pressure [SPL] rizes because the walls don't give way.
For high SPL scores you need a chamber [car-environment] that is as rigid as possible, a big moving mass [cone-area] plus enough force to move that cone area [amps plus battery's].
When using measuring-equipment you can find out the resonance-frequency of you interior and use that to "tune" you system for max. SPL.
Back in 1996 I hit 155,9 Db with only 8 15 inch Cerwin Vega's powered by 4 MS2125 amps. My friend Rene had the same car and together we duplicated the build, but with the same power he never came close to this score because the shape of his interior was different and he never used the RTA analyzer.
Bottom line; there's more to it than just throw in as much speakers and amps that will fit in a car to hit high SPL scores.
Concrete helps....

that makes sense, do you have to worry about the concrete cracking as the vehicle flex's when taken off or put on the trailer? or such movements ? I don't think you would cement your daily driver, although would be nice if you drove it to the scrap yard with a cement floor

my friend and i were talking, and he says he always wanted to do a van with an over the top install like that. i said that a van was too easy and 'what you do the install in is as much a part of the story as what gear you used'. the vehicle in the op is a perfect example of what i meant.
