Windows Irritations

Post by Bfowler »

and of you guys know how to fix this annoyances. (without switching OS's :P )

1 - windows pulls my focus away from things. ie: lets say I'm waiting for a web page to load, and while it is loading i pull up a spread sheet and start working on it. when the web page is done, it automatically opens the web page on top of what i am already doing....pisses me off to no end.

2 - how the shit can i make all my folders default to making items viewed as a list instead of icons?

1. Download "tweak UI" from Microsoft. Enjoy.

2. Open windows explorer (windows key + "e").

Select "Tools"
Select "Folder Options"
Select tab "View"
Click the big button that say "Like current folder"

And BTW, list view sucks ass.

You can fix your first problem with a faster connection and a faster computer. Even my old computer on my slow connection loads complex things before I get a chance to start doing something else.

Windows rocks. I don’t think it is as refined as Mac OS X, but it is highly customizable, and XP has not crashed on me in close to 3 years now. None of the computers I support at work (30-40 computers) fail me either. Everything is user errors.

Most MS XP failures are caused by the fingertip to keyboard interface. and in the other cases it's the noggin to finger interface system. XP is solid for me.

And yes, icon view sucks ass. It wurks guud fir peeples what kant reeds reel guud thow.

While I 150% agree that problems caused in Windows are nearly always user problems, it's the fact that there is so much room for error that makes it a poor OS. I have never had more than minor hiccups while running Windows at work, and only have occasional problems with my family (after I had properly configured the system).

The average person's computer though is almost always fucked, and this causes me severe amounts of mental anguish. As soon as people hear I am a computer scientist, this immediately means I am expected to wave my magic wand over their porn virus infested shit box to fix everything. Sure, you can blame everything on the user... but why is the user able to blow up their computer in the first place? If Windows is truly the ideal personal computing choice, it should be much less easy to mess up for an untrained user, just as it is for a professional.

Blaming it on the user is like asking people to walk through a field rife with mines. Someone trained with a mine detector will likely make it through okay, but most sheeple will go grazing through the field and blow themselves up. Is it really fair in this case to blame the user? Or do you blame the minefield instead? Why choose the minefield when there is a nice clean street next to it?

Anyways, back to the real topic. Brian, what browser do you use? There may be a preference, which make the window regain focus after it loads a page.

it is my work computer, so im kinda limited.. i did get approved for a 1gig memory upgrade recently that helped, and we have a t3 coming into our switch.

that was only an example of a situation. it also happens on things i can control, like connecting to slow ftp's, waiting for photo-shop to open 2gig files, converting things to pdf's. \

basically anything that takes time to process, and i tries to pop up over whatever im doing at the same time
