GT5? Sorry not a big gammer play GTA, halo, nba, or football games back in the day. Bought a xbox360 last year, and used it emm maybe 5 times for a total of maybe maybe 10hrs lol. I only want the PS3 as a twofer...blu ray and video games when I rarely want to play them.

Funny, no 10 is exactly what I'm going to do. I'm good friends w/the local store manager of H.H.Greggs. I get stupid crazy discounts. I ca probably get the Toshiba A30 for around $70. I want it for upscaling movies and as another dedicated DVD player.

I know I don’t want one as an upscaling DVD player. These new high def units have very long boot up times, far too long for my limited level of patients. My Blu-ray player takes about 2 minutes to turn on and it drives me nuts.

I bought a very cheap Toshiba upscaling DVD player with HDMI and it boots in about 5 to 10 seconds. I am really looking forward to a few more generations down the road of Blu-ray.

aunts' Tosh HD-XE1 or XA2 ( in the US ) was advertised as being much faster in booting up compared to its predecessor .Well maybe they weren't lying on that fact but it does take a good 40 seconds to boot up...

Though tosh has withdrawn from the game but they've promised 5 years of support on their HD dvd players so hopefully future firmware would improve the boot time. They've already released a few so far,4 updates if I'm not mistaken.

Except for the booting time , this player is simply an excellent sd dvd player too.
When we got it a few months ago, i hooked it up to the resident sony wega 34' tv thru component and played spiderman on dvd.
There was definitely a difference in the way this fella handles color texture and the level of black is just so much better the the resident sony dvd player.

While i was drooling over lookin at the awesome picture quality, my cousin bro who happened to own the spidey dvd walked in after uni . He watched the movie together with us fer a short while like 5 minutes and said " wow high-def does look good doesn't it " ....

so while i surfing over the net on this player lookin for new hacked firmwares ( did find them - region hack ) i came across the reason why this player performs so good..... the heart of the player itself uses the very best video processor available to date on any commercial stuffs,the silicon optix's REON HQV processor used in high end stuffs.

DD5.1 thru toslink is also equally impressive, much more dynamic sounding and clearer precise surround steering . A good all-rounder indeed .

Only the recently lauched Denon bluray player actually has a better processor, REON's elder brother ,the REALTA which is apparently meant for the professional gears.

That is awful.... now I am even more turned off of this HD crap.

I think I'll have to lovingly hold my CRT and DVDs, until the market is totally dead.

I don't know about HD-DVD, but my Blu-ray player is really just a simplified computer. It has its own OS and boots it like a PC. Hell, the firmware update I did was over 100MB in size.

They are working to make them faster, but it will be some time. Does anyone remember this from the first days of DVD? At that time the players were also simplified computers like today. They had to boot as well. As these technologies improve, companies start making dedicated ICs which do the heavy lifting. In time they get things smaller and faster and more specific.

The first thing I ever played a MP3 on was my Apple Performa, and at 100MHz, it took all its processing power to play a MP3 file. Now and iPod shuffle can play smoothly but is a fraction of its size. This is because the iPod has dedicated ICs which are built just to decode MP3 or other audio files. Try running an OS on an iPod like a desktop or notebook computer. It would choke from being so slow.

After a bit of investigation, it does appear that HD-DVD players are just mini PC's, with consumer chips and RAM:

That explains the boot time. I was expecting this stuff to be solid-state, as you said. Strangely enough my first gen Toshiba DVD player boots up faster than my current one (it's practically instantaneous), so I never really experienced that issue with DVD at all.
