i went with the liteon, but honestly, i don't think there is BAD choice right now. any name brand is pretty decent. read some reviews on newegg.

the software side is FAR more important IMO. finding the right formatting program was the complicated part for me

Screw future shop then. That's the kind of thing you would buy from Memoryexpress in Calgary or NCIX or similar in Vancouver.

Many options under $40...

i was going to suggest the LG. I had a cheap one, and it crapped out after a while. i then got an LG, and it is much more stable. Plus, the copies of 'backup' movies that i have done play in almost everything, when I could only get about 60% to play out of the old burner.

I have an LG that I bought from a discount computer place locally. I don't use it a whole lot, but enough. I used to make plenty of CDs and DVDs with my music on them, but ever since I got my Ipod, I don't need to anymore.

Anyway, I paid $40 or $50 for it a few years ago, I've had it installed in my tower, in an external case, and now back in my "new" tower.

I recently had an LG DVD-ROM/CDRW crap out on me. That doesn't say anything about overall LG quality, though. Just an anecdote.
