So, looking for a diesel AWD car.

Have a car? Is it broken? Want to make it faster? Got cool pictures?

So, looking for a diesel AWD car.

Post by mr tibbs »

Options?? So far the Audi A3 TDI is the front runner, but that is only rumored to be an AWD for 2011. Are there any other options? I would look at a hybrid, but I think that for the long drive a diesel would be better. And as far as the AWD goes I would feel a hell of a lot more comfortable letting the wife take the car in the winter if it was AWD. The Saturn is going down hill and I'm not sure how long it's going to last.

Diesel for the power and gas mileage and AWD for the wife driving in the winter. The Saturn gets 37 mpg's (still), but it's worthless in the winter. I would like to stay at close to the same gas mileage, but with AWD.

And a truck is out of the running. We have the FJ so the wife wants a "car". And since I own a Toyota, a Jeep is out of the question.

Beat me to it! All Subaru's are AWD now, they don't make a FWD car anymore that I am aware of (could be wrong), so that would be why it's not listed...

Well, the only reason he wanted diesel was for gas mileage, but that's really not needed with them...

But yes they do. The Forester was released in a diesel version, but of course not for the US  So ya, maybe soon we will get the diesel version?

Remember, we Americans think that diesel is gross, that's why we don't get diesel cars  Stupid car manufactures. They know the market best!

Well, after crunching the numbers (finally) between the Audi A3 TDI AWD, and the Toyota Matriz AWD that we were originally looking at it will take approximately 10.5 years to pay off the difference between the two vehicles in gas mileage. That's a little too long for me.

Mix in the fact that the Toyota will be cheaper to insure and service I'm now leaning towards the Matrix pretty heavily.

Damn numbers always getting in the way!

If you have ever made money buying and driving a car then I want proof!!!!! Cars are the biggest hole for yer hard earned cash.... Oil changes, tune-ups, brake jobs, car washes ect ect....and forget the trade-in value.... I say buy a car that fits yer budget and that you like to drive. Sounds like there will be alot of that.....

VW has 4Motion and Audi has Quattro, both are AWD. I am after a AWD first and a diesel second, but it looks like there is just not the demand for both together here in the states. It's a shame, it looks to be a kick ass combo!

My take on it...

If you want AWD, go with either Audi or Subaru as all other company's AWD technology in this class is inferior.

The real world results as I have had both company's vehicles:

#1 winner is Subaru:
Pros- most bang for the $$$ in it's class, turbo power and great differential choices make it an unbelievable all-year-round vehicle, very fun to drive and handle superbly, turbo models easily upgraded to make +350 awhp, unique exterior designs, great interiors and materials used, decent gas mileage, great resale value and sought after by buyers, and best of all they are easy to service and moderately priced to repair...which will be rare if ever.

Cons- decent gas mileage, some models heavy=brakes replaced more often.

#2 Audi A3, A4:
Pros- top of the line materials used inside and out, quiet ride, fit and finish is excellent, ride quality is soft yet responsive, engine choices a plus.

Cons- hand over your monthly income for any service and/or repairs, heavy=brakes go bye bye quick, initial buy in is much greater, competitive models engine sizes to power are average, gas mileage on non-TDI are average, advanced or expert experience needed to repair/service vehicle on own, over-engineered...everything is a puzzle to remove/replace, glove box latch design is a FAIL, modifying vehicle is very pricey, lacks overall driving fun factor.
14 PG amps from M/MS/ZX/Ti/LE and counting....the addiction continues...

and legacys... they're extremely popular. Boxer Diesel works well. Diesels are now over 40% of the new registrations in Germany.

I won't talk about A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI Quattros either, then ;)

Well, the wife Hydro locked the Saturn on Thursday (longish story) forcing our hand on the whole new car thing. We now own a......

Toyota RAV4! 2007, Black, and here is the add for it. And no, I did not pay that much. After driving it around today some more I am pretty damn happy. We got the V6 instead of the 4 cyl because the gas mileage (on paper) is pretty damn close. For what I paid and it being a Certified used Toyota I feel pretty good about this. It's still AWD and the wife will drive it 90% of the time. Not too shabby.
