Wierd problem w/ my car

Post by bdubs767 »

My oil light has started to act up on me, and to me is very strange. When I first turn my car on nothing but after driving around for 5 minutes every time my car goes below 5 mph the oil light comes on. Once I hit the accelarator the light goes off. So I checked my oil, if the perfect range...kept up on oil changes.

Any ideas? My guess is electrical.

Year, make, and model? I'm guessing a bad oil sensor, IIRC you have a GM car?

My bad, for some reason I thought you had a Bonneville or something similar. Still, I would look in the direction of the oil sending unit. It might be a cheap place to start.

Could be your oil pump is getting all shoddy on the pressure drops when your RPMs are low.

I know my oil pressure changes with RPM but it never drops low.

Just a wild guess.

That's my guess as well. It might be that it doesn't happen the first few minutes because the oil is still heating up. If the car is warm when you first start it up does the problem present itself right away?

Could be a bad oil press sensor.

If not, I would try to use an oil cleaner... I have done this to several.

To be honest, I have the same problem to my newly bought Chrysler Voyager.... So I am going to do the same procedure to my car tonight or tomorrow...

What weight oil are you using? You might just need to use a slightly heavier one, to make it easier for the pump to keep up your oil pressure.

In my Saab for instance, it has been shown that lighter 30 weight oils do not keep up the stock required oil pressure. You need a 40 weight to keep it consistent at idle.

Then again, if the light is coming on, you are getting REALLY low pressure. Is your engine prone to sludging, like some cars are? Your oil pickup might be blocked somehow, though normally that causes problems before the car is warmed up.

those motors are prone to oil pump problems and then they take a big ole poopy! and salvage engines are expensive if you can find one and remans are really expensive!!!!!

I am really thinking about going to go look into trading my car in before shit hits the fan, atleast explore it.

Any other cars you guys would recommend to go look at.

Id be looking for about a year used, refuse to buy new, and around 15k to 20k, maybe if I really want it I would go up to 25k. Under 30k for miles too.

I know you like you cars a little bigger.

Acura TL. gorgeous and reliable decently sized.

Nissan Maxima Little bigger, not quite as nice, still a super solid car and fun to drive.

Not really...dad gave me the intrepid soph yr of high school...had it ever since.

I would prefer a mid size tho, big cars suck up to much gas.

Their is nothing wrong with american cars. Properly maintained, and regularly serviced cars should last several years like mentioned. The huge recall on nissan cars, and several benz's just goes to show that any car/ cars can take a dump on you. I for one know my crownvictoria an (american car) is running way better than my moms toyota, of which has been blowing out smoke lately. In all its just a matter of opinion, but their is nothing wrong with american cars. Ide wager to say most of everyone on this forum hasnt even owned a brand new american car. We often make assumptions based on what he said, or she said, rather than learning for yourself. Not trying to stir up any arguments here, but thats something to think about. Its probably pointless debating on this site since 99.9% on this forum drives imports/ german cars
