Flaming Gorge trip

Post by mr tibbs »

Monday the wife and I got up early and met the parents in Wyoming. We went boating and fishing on Monday and camped that night at a boat camp. It was a pain in the ass, but fun. Tuesday we did some more fishing and boating, and then took the long way home. The wife had never seen the dam so we went past there even though it was out of the way. It was a damn good time! Here are some pics from the trip.

Image
We found a herd of these guys coming down to get a drink in the cool water on the way to the boat camp. Big horn sheep!!

Image
Notice the collars; it looks like this herd is being tracked by the DWR.

Image
Some of the little ones. All of these pics were taken off of the boat. I love my new telephoto lens!!

Image
An Osprey in a nest.

Image
We found this one right by the Big horns, but after we started to look around there were nests everywhere!!

Image
Some of the scenery around the boat camp. Taking pics off the boat turned out pretty good!

Image
This is the island the Big horns were on.

Sunset!

Image
Here is my attempt at a moon rise pic. I have no idea what the green dot is. It's in all of the moon pics.

So, I learned a very important photography lesson on this trip. It was a full moon out on Monday night so I tried to take some night pics. It wasn't working out so I cranked the iso up to 1600. Well, I forgot to set it back for the rest of the trip. The next set of pics have so much noise in them because of the iso setting. Lesson learned.

Image
Here is an overlook of the boat ramp that we launched from. This is only a small portion of this HUGE reservoir.

Image
Flaming gorge dam. The water depth here is somewhere around 425 feet.

Image
The other side. IIRC they said the dam is 502 feet tall!!!

Image
The suspension bridge over the diversion tunnel they used while building the dam

Image
Here you can see where the diversion tunnel is in relation to the dam

Well, that's about it. I'm pretty damn pissed off at myself over the iso setting. What a shame, I had some pretty good shots in there that I couldn't use.

Yeah i've done that with ISO a handful of times. Really wish Canon let you use the auto-ISO function on the XTi :(. It only works in the automatic modes. Although from seeing those pics, the Canon isn't as bad at 1600 at least.

I do like the HDR-esque effect it gives you. Some tougher shots just need high ISO to get the contrast right.

Right, I have the Canon. And it is not as bad at 1600, though still pretty noisy.

Sorry, brain fart. Yeah, the shots I tried to take at night didn't turn out at all. It was pretty horrible.

I was just about to poke fun at how Utah has a placed called "Flaming Gorge" but then you disappointed me by revealing that it's in Wisconsin :(

I would have preferred the irony of a flaming gorge being in Utah :D

I read Wyoming and my brain translated that to Wisconsin. Dunno why. Wisconsin is pretty far away from Utah, I should have thought about that while typing... but alas, I did not!

Nice photos, by the way. Animals are pretty awesome to photograph.
