sound matting doors question

Post by kg1961 »

My car is a 2012 Hyundai santa fe
when I took off my door card I was surprised the door are solid on the in side meaning there is no holes in my door metal other than the speakers like all my other car have had?
so when I add matting should I doo all the door but behind the speaker as I can't really make pods do I leave it or add matting to make a fake kinda pod?

There are a few cars like that. in that case you can do the 25% rule if ya want but for the sake of keeping a little more noise out I like to cover everything.

My guess would be there are small screws around the edge of the door that let's you take the outer skin off. Probably plastic dentless like the saturn. I hated putting lock actuators in those. Could try that if you really want to get in there.

yea saturns have done that for a long time. One of the shops I worked at had the cheapest keyless entries as well as the cheapest labor to add actuators to a car that didn't have power locks. I got VERY good over those 3 years at actuators and the only car I ever turned down was a Saturn. I told the owner I could do it I would just need to cut some holes in the door and they didn't want to do it.

If I could remove it I will look
But I didn't see anything and it was metal not plastic for sure my xover were miunted so you can see the metal.
I will cover the whole door. Now with the opening were the speaker is do I leave it open or take matting and make a area like a pod? Im not going stupid with mids
Clarion Sss601 loved them and they sound great not like most clarion speaker

I wouldn't make pods. Most mids are designed to be freeair, so making pods or areas with limited airspace might negatively effect your output. I had that problem years with MB quart mids.

If you can add damper to both the inner and outer skins of the door hen you should be all set.

Some cars make it really easy to get the outer skin, like on mine the inner skin was removable (like what was mentioned earlier).
A few of these and a few of those.

I have made pods for my last two builds and liked them both imo but they were both diamond audio hex. Not sure if they like them or what but they both sounded better to me, tighter bass for sure. Tupperware with some sound damping mat makes a good enclosure and it also keeps the speaker dry which is priceless imo. You get some funny looks when your in the Tupperware isle at wallmart trying to find the best fit for a speaker but between the many sizes/shapes I have never had an issue yet with making some.

Cutting one in half to use as water shields works well too.
