Nooob to the Phoenix gold phorum.. tech questions inside

Post by Theft-repo-sol »

high guys how is everybody?
noob from Tennessee here, by noob i mean to the phorum not car audio.
here is the story. i got a phoenix gold ms 2125 as part of payment for doing a buddy of mines timing belt and water pump on his Honda.

being an old skool phoenix gold bass head i snatched it up. well i started researching about the amp and discovered that the caps go bad over time thanks to stipud and the phorum.
http://www.phoenixphorum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9930
so i popped the cover and it looked great! at first.......

Image

upon closer inspection i found oxidation on the transistors from electrolytic leakage.

so my first question is do you guys think this is salvagable?
my second question is if the board is salvagable can someone spoon feed a noob the links for the replacement caps?
i saw where stipud had links but i found a slight indescrepency about the ms 2125. he said the ms 2125 used 50v main caps and when i inspected them closely they had 40v printed on the side. not trying to offend just want to attempt to do the cap replacement correctly. sorry for the photobucket links but i couldn't figure out how to attach images yet. lol NOOOOOB!
thanks everybody

This may help...

The caps are the same as those in the MS2125.

thanks Eric D. ill use those techniques when i get all my parts sorted out. love the AVI BTW.
finally got my images to post. bbcode takes a little while to get use to LOL.
i dug a little more and found this link.
http://www.phoenixphorum.com/viewtopic. ... 78&p=90796
within the page i found three capacitors compatible with the ms2125. can any body tell me which would be the most cost effective while keeping the amp within spec.

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... e=P6940-ND
http://www.newark.com/illinois-capacito ... dp/70K9460

i also found the input caps......

if anybody could give me advice on how to make my links work i'd much appreciate it. tried ]url]http:/blah-blah.com[/url[ but it didnt work. i know the beginning and end brackets are facing the wrong way but its the only way i could get it to post.
thanks theft-repo

small update:
got 100% isopropyl alcohol and cleaned the transistors up. i think it looks promising, so im going to temporarily hook it up tomorrow to see if it will run. if it does then ive got to decide which rail CAPs to go with.

pretty sure we would NOT recommend powering it up with out at the very least taking some paper to see if its wet under the caps. Even a quick power up can smoke it.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

thank you for the advice ttocs. if this was my honda forum (dseries.org) id rep you and eric d. i performed the paper test with toilet paper and i got nothing. here's a little history of the amp. it cam from my buddy that got it from a buddy. the last time it was hooked up it ran but that was 12 years ago, im going to risk it. ill post a start up vid. hopefully itll be all unicorns and rainbows. lol

yea hopefully as once you let the magic smoke out of the electronics it can be hard to put back in. Cap explosions can be big enough to take out the board and then you are lucky to scrap a couple of parts from them.

NO NO NO !!!!!!

please have the patience and DON'T power it up with the old caps in it................

replace first the 12 ps caps (and new sil pads) . when that is done, you can give it a shot......

you can follow the topics to do this.........

this is an amp you can enjoy for years after cap replacement..............

you can leave the big blue rail caps in, there fine..............
