RSD12D..to IB or no?

Post by jiggad369 »

Hello everyone, I've just joined this forum and hope you guys welcome with grace.

I'm kind of stuck in a frenzy here. I don't know what do do with my subbass setup. I have a RSD12D on hand right and I don't know for sure if I want to go with IB or sealed box setup. I'm kind of a basshead but not a SPL fan. One of the main question is...are the RSD's favorable/ideal for IB or should I opt for another 10" or 12" driver? I chose this driver because of the popularity here of it's performance and the price. Another one of my main concerns is will one RSD be loud enough in IB config? I know this is all subjective to each ear but the reason why I ask and not try is because I do not want to go through the hassle of fabricating another setup for two subs if one is not enough. It's going to be a bit*h to make a baffle for just one this week. Should I stick with RSD or do you guys recommend anythign else? Budget is tight right now.

Also, space is not a issue here (can fit two 12's easily) however, there are too many angles and I can't simply just cut a sheet of MDF and screw it in the back of the rear seat (read below). Finberglass might be my permanent solution is I intend to finalize IB config.

I'm really leaning towards the idea of IB because this will save alot of space and weight of MDF false floor fabrication, MDF box, etc. 93 octane gas is not cheap . If I do choose to go with the Ib route, it will go behind the rear seat in a 02 Maxima. I'm planning of cutting out the area behind the armrest fold down in the rear seat area so the sub vents into the cabin through here. Front stage will most likely comprise of 7" or 8" SLS powered by ~100wrms in the door and pair of Aura Whispers on each side up top with ~100wrms to each side. Front stage will be powered by a Nakamichi PA-2004. Source unit is a 880PRS. Thank you guys for any help. You guys simply make life easier.

P.S. Power for the sub will be provided by a Kicker DX700 which does almost 800wrms @ 2 ohms.

i think Bdubs did some research on this and decided that its specs made it a go0od candidate for IB, but as far as i know no one here has actually tried it. you could be the first!

oh yeah, and welcome to the phoenix phorum!

also, you might check out the box building tutorial i made in which i used birch plywood for my box. it is about 2/3's the weight of MDF and still very ridged and easy to work with. it could be a happy medium for you between a heavy sealed box and a IB set-up (it was for me)

The subs specs show it as a good IB option but again nobody here has tried it that I am aware of. I thought of trying it but I don't think it is really possible in my car.

Qts is high enough it may work with the low MMS.
