good LORD these RSDC hit hard

Post by NewOldStock »

finally have the camaro about 90% done - still need to finish up the trim pieces, hide some wires in the trunk and tune it... its close, sounds good at low volumes but at high volumes it just becomes noise, I need to play with the phase... though the frequency response is nearly dead flat, with just a small dip around 500hz.

I have come to hate tuning...

at any rate, here is the setup:
Head: Pioneer P3200BT DVD player
Wires: KnuKonceptz wire (power, speaker, RCA)
Fronts: Precision Power 356cs
Subs: (2) RSDC102 in .71 net cubic feet each (need to make that slightly smaller, but for now - holy sh*t)
Amp: Roadster66 #11 (bridged to the fronts, 2-ohm load to the subs.

gains are set at about 1/3 on both fronts and sub channels... and none of the speakers have had any real amount of break-in time.

I have the mids crossed over at 80hz and have been really impressed with the midbass out of these things... but mostly, I am just stunned by the sheer output of the RSDC subs (crossed over at 63hz). I literally scared myself with the Alicia Keys song "No One". The roadster puts out a rated 600w to the sub channel, running two RSDC at 4-ohms each for a 2-ohm load I am getting about 300w (rated) per sub, about 150w per VC... and at half volume, it was shockingly loud. I have to imagine that if I actually turned the gains up to just before clipping, I might not be here tonight to write this post... what the hell do you guys that run 1kw+ to multiples of these things think your doing... thats just insanity. I thought the Fosgate P3 in a ported enclosure in my pickup was loud, but good lord these are insane, I cant imagine how loud they are going to be after they break in.

for those that have used them, I was thinking around .55 - .60 net. I am worried it will limit low-end extension but maybe clean them up a little and make them tighter? opinions/info would be appreciated.

they dont really get louder after break in, but they smooth out!

the just do everything amazing! know you know what all the fuss is about!

how are the mids installed? lets see if we can get those up to the task of keeping up with the rsdcs now!

the mids are nice, at least they seem so at first blush. like I said, the system isnt done being tuned though it does sound good at mid & low volumes but at high (30 of 40) things become harsh and jumbled. I dont have and wont be running a processor, so I need to fiddle with something else to get everything under control at high volumes. I might need to lower my gains again, mess with phase... though half of the songs I listen to sound ok, the other half sound horrible and within minutes fatigue the ear.

I hate tuning.

when running pink noise, I have EQ'd the system flat other than the small dip at 500hz so I dont think its an EQ issue.

I am looking forward to hearing what my two tens will sound like on the rsd1200.1 I just arranged to buy, and also can't wait to hear a fullsized midbass spaker upfront with the corrent power on them too. I think I can see myself dialing some bass out of the signal between the all of them and not have it overwelmin.

Make sure you've got the gains set properly. "Turned up to half volume" doesn't mean anything when the gains are set so that the amp maxes out at half volume ;)

Yep, I know. its a long way from max power yet.

I think that roadster is just pushing a sh*t-ton of power bridged. I genuinely believe its putting out something in the 200 - 250 x 2 range bridged.

kiss those golden ears goodbye ... more like blood-red and dripping ears... :P

I suppose the 30sq/ft of deadener in the trunk isnt hurting things either, but damn!

tuning is done... install is just waiting on the machined aluminum trim piece to tie it all together.

Then pics of my trunk and head unit, since the rest is hidden.
