Frank Amp ‘N Stein install

Hello everyone, I’d just like to introduce myself. I am from Canada and have owned phoenix gold amps in the past. Years ago I had a phoenix gold M 25, M 44, and M100 in a system in Ford ranger with 2 15 inch Orion subs. Recently in my midlife crisis I decided to build another system in a 79 Lincoln.. I’ve acquired a phoenix gold Frank amp n Stein FAS-A 001 and Phoenix gold AX-406A and a bunch of other gear. I’m going to hook it up to duel Orion dvc 15xtr 2 ohm subs in a ported box. I was wondering if anybody could give me a little bit of information on properly hooking this amp to them subs? The amp is in immaculate condition and I do not want to do anything to hurt it.

Thanks
Randy

you got frank #1? first recomendation is not to power it up unless the caps have been swapped or they can explode

Thanks for the reply, the amp was running when I got it so I still have it powered up, I have read some of the stories on the caps. I should have them replaced but I wouldn’t have the slightest clue where to get the work done.

your seriously playing with fire. We can help you find someone to replace the caps but I am not joking when I say explode. It can take out enough of the circuit board to total the amp and that is a mighty nice amp to let the magic smoke out of.

Ok I will definitely look into that deeper. There is a local shop that works on our Marine electronics that I’m sure could change them out for me, I might get in contact with them this afternoon Thanks again.

I found a place that said they could replace the caps no trouble. Is there anyway to tell if the caps have already been replaced or not? I would hate to do it again if it is already been done.

is there a small colored dot sticker on top of one of the larger caps? At some point in production they would put a small dot on one of the caps when it went through quality control but I can't remember if they did it for the franks. otherwise take a pic and we can normally tell.

The actual act of desoldering/soldering the caps is easy and any electronics tech can do that. But the act of taking the circuit board out of the amp and putting it back in requires much more time as it requires separating each of the transistors from the sink and with everything involved getting it apart and back together is a bit of a puzzle. I can't say a marine repair electronics tech would be my first choice but if you know and trust them give it a try. Not sure if you have any car audio specific shops around you but some of the shops I worked at had a repair tech, or at the very least knew of one that they used if they needed help. If you don't know the marine tech that well it might be worth the time to make a call or two and see if anyone local has more experience in amps. There are also people you can ship it to that specialize in these amps and while its a bitch to pack these beasts up there could be one not too far away. But basically you have a really nice amp that if you wanted to sell it for the right price there would be a small line of people ready to pay today so it could be worth the time/trouble to find someone with exp.

Thanks again for the reply, the place I took it to is very reputable. They even design and sell their own line of marine electronics. I have 100% confidence in them. Hopefully it won’t bite me in the ass. I just dropped the amp off a little while ago and he said wouldn’t be a problem, he tracked down the proper caps and hopefully the repair won’t be too long. He said the proper caps he found were in Taiwan. The problem with getting something like this fixed around here is there wouldn’t be a audio place within 500 miles that would work on it Lol. We kind of live in the sticks Lol. I’ve wanted one of these amps since the 90s when I first seen them so hopefully it all works out.

Randy, I run the Phoenix gold registry. If you’d like, PM me your name and providence and I can add your frank. Check the link in my signature, I have a good amount of them registered already, and JK ever let me register his I’m sure I’d be much further along. ;)

Rule #1!! Never tell!!... to be honest... I don't even remember what I have.. I know I have a bunch though... it would take a good amount of time to get all the serial numbers... I know I have 1 ms2125... I know I sold 2 nickels and a sofa or maybe it was a frank... the nickels and frank/sofa went to forum members.. see!! I'm not that bad of a horder.. I'd say my best prize is my brand new never used nickel with red terroids in the box.. I love the nickels with red terroids.. they have so much more detail than the green terroid nickels.. plus they match the franks/sofas.. the nickel and sofa that's installed in my roadster look so good together..

I'd use a PG Line Driver to get a good clean signal to the FAS. Run the sub at 4 ohms (I'm assuming dual 2 ohm coils)..... Put a good fan to keep the FAS cool. Also, get another FAS and put #1 back in a display. Hehehehe. I've spoiled myself with the new TI2 1600.5, so when I use any of my MS or M amps, I need to keep fans on them. Houston gets hot.....

If I had an FAS to use, I'd run the 2125 to a front components set, bridge the 430 to a rear component set and get a class d to push that sub to the limit.....

JK, I understand your desire to keep it all a secret. I like the registry because of cases like what happened to your SoFAS, it got stolen but you didn’t know the serial of it. If it was on the registry then we would know what serial to look for and we would have known that the one in San Diego wasn’t the one.

Again, it’s up to you, it I’ll still be annoying and bugging you to add them until I someday give up on the registry. I think that if your amps were in there it would fill a lot of the gaps and may give answers to some of our questions (like, when did they start using red torroids on the msk?)
