Sorry, on the car audio forum i'm visiting every day it does not look that big.

http://forum.showyoursound.nl/default.asp

I've changed it now.

And my collection off PG is not that big.

I will start to look for all the pictures

Oke, i will start my list.

As the most off us i have as possible used PG cables
Speakercables,............................................ Interlinks................................Connectors and so on
Image Image Image

Back in 1992 i started with one PG MS275

Image

This was my first contact with Phoenix Gold, i sounded great for me.
So on the next holliday i went to Florida because the amps were 1/3 off the Dutch price and bought met two other MS275's
After that the back off my car looked like this.

Image Image Image

When i stopped with this car and put away the amps temporaly, they where stolen.

In 2005 i started car audio again and bought a used MAC200

Image

Wich i still use to test speaker boxes.

Also i bought a ZX Ti 500.4

Image
Not the right picture but pretty close

Which we rebuild to a Phoenix Gold ZX Ti 500.2 with embedded Musical Fidelity Tube Pre Amp.

We did some modifications Tubes are working on +/- 35v
the are JJ type E88CC. We deleted the Filter section Less = More principle. (Modifications are done by Bertje (12VHifi.nl) Also a member on this Forum.

The sound off this project is great. :D :D :D :D :D

At this moment building the car off my wife and this is what will be in the trunk.

A PG M50 special edition (instead off white he is chrome with original PG printing)

Nice Tube frontend mod but I have a single issue with the new case design... I see no vent holes to allow hot air to leave the new case, this will cause thermal issues very quickly.

Am I missing something ???

I'm wondering if you had the chrome silk screened by PG or did you do that yourself?

Easy, he bypassed the crossover input board that sits on top of the main amp board.
He had to custom design the tube circuits to run off +- 35 volts the amps main drive section runs off.
So to recap he removed a large PCB that sits over the main board, so the amp is now a straight four channel amp with no crossover or bass boost. Pretty clean approach, lots of work though.

The tube circuit could have been powered by a voltage doubler or tripler power circuit if need be, the power supply could have been modded with the needed rectifiers and caps to make the high voltage. But I think he was trying to keep it simple and audiophile clean so he went with 35 volts on the tubes.

Not a easy task but a task of love for sure.....C

Martin,

Ik ben Kanadees, maar ik heb wat familie daar in Nederland. Ik ging in 1992 ook een halve jaar naar school (groep 3!).

Ik heb je fotos wel eens gezien via Google. Heel mooi werk!

@Wakeup, it SOUNDS GREAT :D .
The pre amp is a design from Musical Fidelity its the X10, but modified.

@1moreamp, at the left site of the amp there is an ventilation hole, so the air passes the tubes first and then it flows directly over the heatsink.
And you explination is right. I'm now searching for building a power suply that can deliver +/- 70 volts. Then the amp will sound even better.

@Mr Tibbs, you mean the M50 and M44? They are chromed and printed again by Phoenix Gold.

@eyesofra, your totaly right :wink:

@Stipud, vandaar, maar we praten hier beter engels, anders begrijpen ze er niets van. :)

I had mine stolen about 8 years ago and i just got it back but the shroud kit was gone. any help would be great since Phoenix Gold is no help these days.

Morning martinkruit,
try looking into a simple voltage doubler tied to the toroids windings used for the 35 volt out. I am sure you can get this to double or triple in voltage fairly easy, by using a set of high speed diodes and a few caps.

The other way is to hand wire more wire turns on the toroid to get separate windings to do the job like I have seen on PPI/Butler amps.

A very nice effort Thanks you for the inside look, Always love to see new engineering  :) :) :)

I built /modded the Ti450 from Martin. It was a lot of work, I also replaced the opamps at the frontend to LM4562. The gains are turned fully down (could be removed also..).

The pre-amp from Musical Fidelity X10D has original a power supply of +30 and -30V, so it runs fine on the +/-35V from the PG. The original MF has a gain from 1-1,1x. but I did it to 2x.

Next EMMA SQ competition season maybe the new European champion pure passive ...(of niet Martin...  )

I agree the op-amps could go easily as the drive from the tubes should be plenty. In any case a very nice effort, and with the custom case work I can see you spent long hours in this project...... C :)

I tried to modify the inputstage, without the input opamps etc. Nevertheless I didn't succeed, and the LM4562 sound really great, so I decied to stick to the original circuit. No problem 8) .
