Main difference between Oldschool TI and ZXTI

Post by shattered_dream »

Sorry for the perhaps dumb question, but what is the main difference between the "old" TI and ZXTI amps ?
I´m thinking about rebuild my amp section for 3 Way active RS Audio Master System...
And a friend of minre recommended me the "old" TI amps....
Now here in germany its very hard to get hands on these amps, and I have the chance to get a zx475TI and a ZX600TI...

If im correct the ti line has a better built in xover and better caps. The actilual ti line isnt prone to leaky caps like the zxti and before models. But i feel the the zxti and zx lines have more headroom than the ti line. Thats all i really know. Im sure someone will chime in and be better specific

Thanks for the Info...
So not really big difference ?
Crossover Functions will not be used, coz of an Alpine PXA H800 or perhaps the new Forge DSP....
So lets see what I can get... As far as now :
ZX450TI for HT/MT Section
ZX600TI TT Section
Zapco Z300 Sub section

ZXti came out first, they were an update to the zx line and yes they had the infamous HFZ caps that leaked. The boards said zero point series. They were updated again to their own series, the titanium series, with the nichicon caps that don't leak. I'm not sure that you'll find much more of a difference. The ZXti amps have more of a tendency to get rust veins but I've seen titanium series amps with them as well.

Okay, changing caps is not a big deal, a friend of mine is an expert in electronics, so that shouldnt be a problem....

Yea changing caps is easy, I do it all the time. I was just telling you what the differences are. I am not aware of any other major differences.

The main difference is the model number only.

No major changes electrically.

Does the Ti series have the gold plated circuit board? I always thought they d/c the gold plated PCB before the Ti series.

No, but neither do the ZXti. The last amps to have that were the ZPA series and the zx series.

Gold plated doesn't mean anything other than looking better. Yes gold does not corrode, but I think PG used it more for aesthetics rather than the corrosion factor. The later amps used copper (a better conductor than gold) and then put a coating over it to protect it.

I was not aware of any cross over differences myself. Wasn't the ZX line still made in the usa and the Ti line off shore

If your referring to this TI line http://download.phoenixphorum.com/Manua ... /Titanium/, these are made in USA. The quality of components and pcb went down hill once they were built off shore.

Agreed. All of the Zx/Ti lines were built here in the states.

They started making certain lower lines overseas as far back as the late 90's, early 00's. These were not though.

I personally wouldn't worry about the graphics. Just update the caps and refinish the heatsink and your good to go. They are really good looking amps regardless of the graphics.

I'm sure someone may have them though. You may have to start a new thread to find out.

I don't recall seeing anyone make the decals myself. It could be as easy as taking it to a local sign store but I don't recall ever seeing any for sale or made to be used. When I had my Diamond audio system in my mustang with two d9 800.4s in it one of them was pretty dicked up. It top of them was polished so there was not much of a chance to get it back close to knew so instead I mounted them so the good one on top covered the bad areas of the one below.

I considered refinishing the ones that I had but the graphics bothered me. Replicating the stuff on the face was easy, the details that explain all of the crossover and gain controls were too small and I didn't think they could be properly replicated.
