Re capping.. And sil pads..
Gonna give re capping a whirl. Got a couple of "donor" amps
I get the capacitor choice..
But what does one look for, for the sil pads for all those heatsink pieces? Brands? Material? Thickness? Heat ratings? Never shopped, never read about them.
All I know is that a few of them should require a paste to the heatsink, the remainders use pads..
Someone educate me/us please .

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
Bcae1.com... That loaded audio related info site.. Read up on thermal pads.. The guy likes, in best to worse order, aluminum oxide, mica, kapton and lastly sil-pads.
Just wondering who uses what around here... And not that I measured yet, but most of these thermal pads already come cut to size, with a hole for the mounting screw... Any particular minimum size I need to get?
That loaded faq on a recapping pg amps.. Sure would come in handy.. Heck, I just might write it up

Yeah I remember a member here buying them in a 500 piece bulk orders and was offering them for 40-50 USD for 100pcs.

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
If I pull the board off an MS heatsink.. I have to deal with the sil pads.. are they reusable, or do they get replaced? I'm assuming they'd get replaced, if anything, considering the age of them. They're dirt cheap, so why wouldn't one toss them anyways?
M line is fine, no need to split the heat sink.. I'll be buying Rick's M25, thats recapped, and I have a recapped M50. Only need to recap my M100 and MS2125.

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
I only replace them if they tear or de-laminate when I remove the devices.
Got "schooled" by member shawn k on May 10th, 2011...
No longer really "in tune" with the audio industry, and probably have not been for some time.
Hands down the forum's most ignorant member...
Don't even know what Ohm's law is...

I get mine off digikey. Pn. BER178-ND is the larger size and pn. BER182-ND is the smaller. The color matches the originals.

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
What about the ones that are pasted on the heatsink.... What's the paste to use?
And Eric : I assume this paste for those heatsink mounts is/would be the same stuff you use for your resistor mod on the m50, where you make a few resistors touch the gold heatsink via a little paste?

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
For what little they cost I just change them. Digikey has tons of different sizes, in fact I just ordered more sil-pads and caps last night. As for the paste I use MG Chemicals Silicone Heat Transfer Compound. A little dab goes a long way.

I use Antec silver thermal grease. It's usually available at stores that sell computer components.

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
At the local electronic store.. They carry that antec similar/equivalent stuff.. Pricey tube at 34$. As not too old mentioned, they have a silicon based paste, at 16bucks for 100times the quantity... Size of a toothpaste tube vs a syringe.vwdude wrote:I use Antec silver thermal grease. It's usually available at stores that sell computer components.

Any real difference here other than the premium price? I know the expensive stuff is better than the cheaper, but is it warranted?

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
Also, locally, the electronics parts store can get panasonic 8200uf caps, but not the nichicons.
Local cost, is 3.80$/ea on 25+, no shipping, just local sales tax at 13%.
Nichicons work out to 2.41$cdn, plus 8 or 20 for shipping.. The 20$ place has duties and all that Jazz incl.. The 8$ shipping place, not sure.
Pretty comparable prices.. Question is.. Which brand do I really want? One guy at the counter was panasonic, and the other guy was in the nichicon camp.
Personally, I want the "better" brand vs looks. The gold takes away from the caps when you start at the darn boards the 2 counter guys were kinda awestruck at my ms2125 I was showing them.. Hehehe

Re: Re capping.. And sil pads..
i cant speak about the sil pads, the page wont open for me and im not too informed on them.
as for thermal paste, i really like the stuff i use. I believe it has better cooling properties and should last longer before it breaks down. is it worth the crazy price? whose to say. I pay $15 per syringe of it, not nearly as crazy as up there.
no, the caps, ive used both types. The panasonic I like because it look like the original HFZ caps. plus, since they are Panasonic I consider them to be original replacements. The nichicon caps I like because they are rated for way more operating hours (5,000 vs 10,000). I also like them because they are pretty close in looks to the original HF series caps. When someone doesnt say their preference I just use the Nichicon.
