I am again waiting on parts so I decided to use the time to start the next project I have had in mind. I wanted to install a dual battery volt meter and got one that I thought would fit in my cig lighter. It didn't fit so after some thought I decided this was a great time to pull out the handibot and combine it with some other things I wanted to do. I wanted to have an indicator on the dash for the line lock and battery isolator as well and had a small spot where the defrost switch and headlight switch use to be to put it all. I figured out a design I liked and I must be learning something as I only had one piece I cut incorrectly and after a quick adjustment the 2nd was perfect. The trim ring and the front plate will get mounted in the dash, the back plate will holds the volt meter and the EL lighting strips so it can be removable if needed to replace later.

nothing good new because as usual if it isn't one thing its the other. Sit and listen when you have a few about how my hard drive crashing threw everything into chaos... My laptop is barely 3 yrs old(no extended warranty) and the hard drive started to die. I went to get it replaced right about the time I was finally finishing all the wiring crap above and was looking forward to starting it and getting it on the ground and rolling. I have still been in the habit of hooking up my laptop to the ecu every time I do start it because I am still datalogging and its in the learning phase so it was about now I realized this was another program I needed to reload. So I did it, hooked up to the ecu and got a error because the ecu was V4 and the software now was v5. It took some time to figure out how to download the tune from the ecu, reflash the firmware and then reload the tune. I got through all that and then started it up but the timing was way off, 15 degrees retarded for some reason. I went to fix that and noticed the fuel pressure was not right and decided to check the filters just cause. Ever have one of those moments were you keep thinking WTF louder louder and louder in your head(or out loud) 3-4 times as it keeps getting worse? This was one of those times as I poured the fuel out of the tank side filter and then opened it up to see this.
Image
I was glad I went with dual filters before/after the pump as the post filter pump was clean so it looks like this one did its job. All I can guess is its 25 yrs of bad gas crap as well as some other stuff from when it was out collected and this is what I got. I had tried to clean the tank out prior to reinstalling it but short of banging the sides with the hole facing down and trying to vacuum it out there isn't much I could do. So i said screw it and ordered a new tank. The tank got her and I went to install it yesterday and got the new fuel level sender mounted, as well as the hat and then went to pull the fuel tank vapor vent check valve over and of course the little nipple that the vac line attaches to broke off. ITs just a stupid little piece of plastic that allows air into the tank when fuel is sucked out and has a check valve that will keep the gas from escaping if its rolled, no big deal right?

Now if you are not familiar with the 94/95 mustang they are bastard years for the stangs with the last 2 years of the 302 and obd1 ignition and the first year of the new body style. Because of these factors there are a few parts that are specific to those years and now generally out of production and this stupid little valve is one of them. I have been on a quest for the last 24 hrs to figure something out that will prevent me from having to drop the tank ever again as its a PIA with the diffuser I made. I found a GM version locally that is close but its .2" diameter bigger. It goes through a thick gasket and I think with a little grease and enough pressure it could be forced in but I am never getting it out and not sure if it will hurt it. I found a ford version on line that was good in mustangs up till 89/90 but I can't find any measurements on it to see what the difference is but it looks the same... The final option is that I drilled out the part where the nipple was and then cut a piece off of a vac line coupler so it can slide into the hole. I am pretty sure with the right epoxy it would be fine but again the question now is what will I pay to keep from having to drop the tank and do this crap again in the next 20 yrs? As of right now the older ford version is ordered, the bigger GM version is plan b and option #3 is the epoxy.

I wonder if there are any 94/95s around here in the junkyard.

its been a long month. Got sick and in the hospital again but in good news it was the first time in 16 months vs 14 visits in my worst year. It took some searching but I found that the older style fox body version of the vent was exactly the same. For some reason it is not advertised that way but it works. I got the new tank in and was still having issues. I was pretty sure that some of the crap in the tank got by the filters and dicked up the injectors again so I pulled and cleaned them and also took the fuel pressure regulator apart to inspect it just to be sure now that all the lines/parts up front were flushed of the bad fuel. It took some time to get the fuel pressure dialed back in then but finally last night I got it to fire up and idle for the first time in months. I had a neighbors pet emergency slow me down today but I managed to get it back on the ground now for the first time in months and even started the process of insuring it. Tomorrow I hope to aim the headlights and sometime I need to take care of the registration so that I can then get an alignment and get the abs pump bled.

unfortunately I do not know any friends as cool as you with your fancy shmancy device. A while back I also realized I do not know any friends cool enough to have a wingsuit to let me borrow. I really need to find some cooler friends I guess........

its insured and registered now. Explain to me how its been off the road for 6-7 years, but the state charged me for last year as well and now its only good till october? I guess they are going to get me one way or another but at this point, I did not care. Going to aim the lights tonight and start putting them back together. After that I am considering that amazon order but I am probably too honest to do it....

Had to sort some things out on the air ride that made me raise/lower it 6 times but its working now. All this time I have not paid much attention to the tune as I had been chasing other gremlins around. Hopefully I have those sorted out know and I was finally able to look at the tune. I had it idling at 1000 rpms just to get it running but I was finally able to get it down to 800 to get its lope back. I am hoping to get the abs pump bled tomorrow and maybe get the alignment done and maybe start some short drives to let the ecu start learning at speed.

been chasing gremlins around it like a mad man but I have been making progress. I did a remote tuning session and right at the end of it we found my throttle position sensor was drifting and showing 2-4% when I was not touching anything. This messes everything up on the tune as it thinks I giving it more gas and with no more air = rich. because of this the plugs were black as hell so I swapped them out as well as the tps. The next day I fired it up and again when the car got hot it showed the tps was off again. It ended up being the harness on the tps would expand when it was hot and not make as good of contact and throw things off so after a new harness things are much better.

Not sure why the youtube links don't work anymore?

after replacing the tps and the harness I was having issues getting the throttle stop screw at the correct position to where the idle air control valve was at 10-15% open at hot idle. I would spend 2 hours doing a dance back and forth adjusting the throttle stop screw to watch the IAC. After getting it set up for some reason the next day it would show 40-50% open, or 0%. Not sure if it was just more fine tuning but I think I got that set up now and its starting and idling nicely, just waiting till I can afford another remote tuning session... Just about the time I am ready to take a short drive, they started testing missiles on my street to replace the really bad sections. The tore out the really bad spots and then filled it with gravel and then watched the heavy rains wash all that gravel out over the next 3 weeks.... The filled it back in 2 times and now finally came back and filled in over the gravel with blacktop and are supposed to come back and do the entire road from edge to edge. Hopefully they do it soon as it is still bumpier then I want to take a car with a incorrectly adjusted suspension on just to get the wheel alignment done. While I was waiting on that I decided I was finally sick of the holes in my dash so I decided to fill them. I got a kenwood double din and metra made a new kit for my year that makes it easy to go from the two single din openings to the double din.
Image
But it looked a little boring to me so I decided to make use of some of that space with my cnc to allow for easy usb ports and for my radar detector buttons. I cut this piece out of abs and then cut a hole in the dash to mount it in from the back.
Image
then with some epoxy, filler and paint tada!
Image
I need to get a pic of it with everything lit up as with an EL lighting sheet behind the plexi the words light up. After that I wanted to install my passenger air bag but after trying 3 different bags it became obvious that the under-dash bracing where the bag mounts was bent bad enough that any new bag sticks out 2". I tried bending it back but its pretty stiff stuff and I am not sure short of replacing the dash, or heating up those mounts that its not going to happen. With that being decided I needed a cover for the hole. There is a place that makes an abs plastic piece that sticks in but its ugly as heck and $40. I know I can do cooler for less so I started with this idea. This is my first time trying to inlay letters. It might be hard to see that there are 4 pieces there, the clear plexi that makes up the words is cut out of .22" thick material so that it will stick up about .05" above the top of the abs. The red square that is the period is another piece that was cut and painted and then installed in the first clear piece. Then there is the center of the "O" that was cut out of abs and finally the pony logo is an old piece I got at a show years ago and the plexi it mounts to was cut so that the base of the logo will be just below the top of the abs and it leaves a gap around it for when its lit up to make a backlit profile. Just waiting on the lighting sheet for it to light it up and then I need to heat it up and bend it into place.
Image

Man I love that cnc.....

What cnc and software do you have?

What hole where the bag mounts go?

I have a handibot. Its a small portable cnc. Its great because its small and you can use it in a lot of places that a regular one can't go, but in the same breath its downfall is that its cutting area is 6 x 8 x 3 (X x Y x Z). You can do can cut larger projects up into small tiles and do them one at at time but small projects like this are what its really good at. I am using V-carve pro for the design software and been pretty happy with it so far. In general it opened up an entirely new relm of stuff I can do and its been fun learning it so far. I am about to try my first aluminum project to make some simple trim rings for another small project.

keep your eyes open on your local craigs list. I had no intention of getting it but had wanted one when it turned up on CL. After a short look it also turned out the guy selling it was along the same route I walked my dog so I stopped by and took a look one day. 3 weeks later it was still for sale so I made an offer. I have seen a couple of others pop up on there since.

here is a link to my imgur page that shows the airbag finished. For some reason posting pics only makes them HUGE and hard to see.

I have been wanting to move up to machining aluminum for some time but been holding back for one reason or another. I decided to get started on that this week by making some simple trim rings to go around some of the other pieces I made. It is mainly just to hide the edge of the EL lighting that does not light up but also finishes it off nicely. Here is a link to the imgur page that shows them. The pics really do not do them justice as the aluminum rings vs acrylic is just so much nicer. Tuesday I have what I hope is my final remote tuning session and then it will be out on the road to chase out some more gremlins.
