got the car running/idling/cooling well enough that I decided to try and take it down the street and back maybe 100yds. I can't tell you how excited I was to see it move from the spot it had been in for the past 5 yrs and start rolling. Between the new gears in the rear end, new clutch and new hp needless to say I was babying it a bit and was not surprised to kill it right at the end of the driveway. No big deal really so I went to start it up and it was cranking slow.... REally slow and the 2nd time I tried I heard a fuse pop and lost all power. To say I heard it pop was an understatement, ever heard a 200amp fuse "pop", you know it went... So I replace it and its still just cranking really slow. I know some 302s suffer starting problems from heat soad after header installs but that is normally for long tubes and I am running shorties but either way I was just hoping it was a starter as its easy to get too and still under warranty. I Took it off and had it tested and it was good. It was at this point I was a little worried why the motor was cranking so slowly and remembered a couple of little things the day before. At one point while it was running I thought I heard a little more noise then normal from the supercharger/alt area. IT wasn't a huge noise, just a little more mechanical then normal is about all I could say so when I saw all the numbers were good I just let it go. The next day after a short run I happened to bump the alt and noticed its case was a little hotter then I thought it would be but I had never checked it for temp so I let it go as well. I took off the supercharger belt and it still turned free so I was happy with that. Then when I took the serpentine belt off the alt was locked up. It would not turn a bit... My big beautiful old school bastard pg alt killed it..... As disappointed as I was I was also relieved it wasn't a deeper issue with the motor and the alt is easy to get to and remove so I got it off and to the alt shop to see what happened hoping it was just a bad bearing. I got the call today that the bearing was bad as it looked like the grease in it dried out. Unfortunately when it went it also allowed the stator to rub a bit to the point it needs to be replaced. They are checking on replacements now, good news is I might be able to upgrade the output but its not going to be a cheap/easy bearing repair....

I know it sucks that your alt went, but like you said, it could have been a lot worse. With all of the modifications you have done, you were almost guaranteed something wasn‘t going to go perfectly. That’s just the way things like that go. It’s nice to see all of your progress with this project over the years. Keep up the good work and continue to provide updates. Even though this phorum has been quiet as of late, it’s still good to receive updates on members projects.

Ok so start it without the accessories belt on and see if it cranks over. Hahaha tightening the belt too tight is a quick way to destroy an alternator

I took it in they said that it looked like the sealed bearings had leaked and dried out. They said it looked like a wax/goo coming out of them. The bearings were original to the alt which is probably 20+yrs old and yea sure a sealed bearing not being used should be ok but even when not used things can wear out. I got the alt and the starter installed again tonight and it cranked right over much faster they it had been maybe the bearing was going out for longer then I knew. While I still have the front end up I want to change and check the oil and bleed the front brakes again to hopefully get them a little tighter but after that I am going to try and make past the driveway.

Good news! Do you have a pressure bleeder? It was are a god send when I installed my Wilwood 6 pistons.

I always say, “Running equipment is hard on it. Letting equipment sit is even harder on it.” It makes sense a 20+ year old alternator that has never been used before has issues. Where I work, if we take equipment such as an electric motor for a pump out of service, we set up regular preventitve maintenance tasks to rotate that motor.

I got a pressure bleeder for the brakes but I think I need a little more practice with it as it didn't seem as easy as it always seemed for everyone else. I have had the car put back together and running since last friday. It was only for a short run as I just wanted to be sure it was running again before I rebled the brakes and did the oil. Friday was actually my birthday and my work was interrupted by my friends and fam calling, I could not complain too much to put the work off to catch up. During the calls I just realized I can do both of those later in the night and have it ready to try and drive tomorrow. My usual stomach problems had been bothering me but 30 mins after dinner things got worse. I think I got a stomach bug or something, its hard to tell with my usual problems and I will spare you the ugly details to just say its been worse then normal since and a shitty week... Now I have had my phone turned off for 2 days as after loosing nearly 20 lbs I am just exhausted and can't stay awake. I think its getting better but I do not want to say that out loud and jinx it.... The car is still waiting for the brakes/oil.

Happy birthday buddy! I figured you were having stomache issues because you got quiet. Pressure bleeders work magic if you have the correct adapter. I know on my car, i have to keep positive pressure or the abs accumulators will have air in them and you have to go to the dealer to have them bled.. which is a nightmare.

thank you very much. Wouldn't you know it that just as I am back on my feet my dog gets the hershey squirts. Poor little thing but she is doing better already.

you will never freeking guess what happened. Its just unbelievable.... After a being sick for a week and then spending a day in the garage removing the wheels/bleeding the brakes and putting it all back together just wore me out. As much as I wanted to go out and try it at first light I was just too tired. I slept all damn day. Finally after dinner I woke up and decided to give it a go. I went out and got her started up and running. I wanted to get it up to 160 degrees to enter learning mode for the drive so I pulled it out into the driveway while it warmed up. I got a little worried as something sounded different but after realizing its the first time I have heard it out of the garage and with the hood down, yup it sounded different. So 160 hits and I decided to wait a little longer for the thermostat to open and get the cooling system going. Once it did I released the parking brake and eased it out of the driveway. I live on a section that has a loop but part of that loop has a hill I wanted to avoid because the brakes were still a little softer then I liked, but once I got down to the end of the road I realized they would be ok and just took the loop. I had to laugh as the neighborhood wrencher and his son were standing out on the corner to watch as I went by as they have never hung out there before..... They gave me a thumbs up, pretty sure I just returned a worried look. BUT IT WORKED!!!! I was a little worried about the noise from the back end but I think it was just some of the extra parts I have stored in the trunk. I will have to empty it out and try it again tomorrow but for the first time in 6 yrs the stang is parked forwards in the garage.

been plugging away at the car. I had it starting when it was cold but then when it was hot it would just crank and crank. After some reading about temp enrichment I made some major changes to the tune in the starting section to the point I was not sure that it would start when it was cold. I was happy to see that it actually started faster when it was cold and would also start then at 180 degrees as well. Still a lot to learn on the tuning area and I mean a LOT LOT....

I have also been plugging away at the brakes because they are so soft. I bled them 3 times 3 different ways but they were still soft as hell. After some reading since it was a completely dry system my abs pump needs to be bench bled before install. I have not found instructions on how to do that but the other option is to get it into emergency braking where the abs pump activates and it will cycle the air out. After a short rain storm my neighbors had to be wondering what I was doing sliding down the street as they would lock up and the abs would not kick on. Looking into the problem the only part of the abs system that I did not currently have installed was the warning light after the dash was replaced. I thought it was just an indicator to show a problem but that circuit also feeds the relay that powers the abs pump so that when there is a problem the abs shuts down to prevent problems. I got a light from the local parts store and wired it up and it turned on solid with the key to show that there was a fault/err. I grounded the wire in the harness to put it in to diagnostic mode and it flashed an err to show that one of the rear wheels speed sensors was bad. I checked its impedance back by the sensor and got 2.4k ohms which is in spec but when I measure it up front at the abs module it shows nothing indicating a broken wire/circuit. I started tracing the wires and was amazed in the third spot I looked to find a brown wire looking right back at me that had been cut. I had been tracing a pair of brown and tan/green, and sure enough there was the other half of the brown wire and the tan/green. I checked it and it showed 2.4k, wired it up and cleared the codes and now the light comes on for a second and turns off like it should. I am wiring up a relay to interrupt that circuit for when I turn my line lock on but after that hopefully I can finally get the brakes bled and get the car stopping to see how well it goes. Already started checking out classic car insurance. Besides grundy or haggerdy has anyone had any experience with a classic car insurance?

I think you are onto something there, I wouldnt activate the system to bleed it, but thats just me. Heres a good article on bleeding ABS systems. http://www.brakeandfrontend.com/bleeding-abs-systems/

yea they make a tool to do it but with my system being the old obd1 ford system the cheapest scan tool that can cycle the abs is $350. I asked around if anyone I knew happened to have one and not surprisingly no one did. So it was time for plan b yesterday after buttoning up the dash wiring. I have never been more happy to feel the pedal kick back when abs kicked in. IT WORKED!!! Today I hope to do my bleed dance and go for another ride to see if it can really stop now. I was really happy with how the motor ran yesterday and ran it up to about 3k in 2nd gear and it had no hesitation or problems at all.

what do ya mean "about to finish" lol? I am was beyond happy when I got the timing set and it started to sound ok. Was 3x as happy that when I figured out the new thermostat was bad and got it to stay cool by replacing it. Figuring out the temp enrichment to get it to start when its hot was 5-6x and now after all the research on the brakes to bet the abs to work I can't explain. Well yes I can actually I have the brakes bled and much better pedal feel now and I am dying to take it around the block again but I am waiting on the mail lady for a ride height sensor I need to replace before I can put the front wheels back on. I am sitting at the window now looking out any time I hear a car go by no matter if it sounds like a mail jeep or not. But almost finished? I need to take a pic of the inside so you can understand that. As soon as I can button up the motor/brakes and get it back on the road I am really looking forward to getting back into the stereo I was trying to install when I had the accident. that will take some time... I heard long ago that projects are never really finished until they are sold and I have no plans on selling this.

Ok.. ok.. so you want a never ending project...i have one of those myself. Yes, some interior pics would be cool. I didn't read the project log 100% but has the direction changed? Do you have a golden path for the related tasks? What chu gonna do with it once you are "done"

its changed directions a few times over the years but in this build/rebuild more then a few things changed as I found good deals on some stuff like the supercharger for example and after that I wanted to upgrade the brakes to compensate for the new hp and decided to go overboard on that with the baer setup. Never had a completely set plan on it most it just came up and I could not think of a reason NOT too so..... The interior has nothing it in right now short of the seats/dash/console. My plans for the system after its back on the road will be elaborate. I wanted to go with the zen9 5-6 yrs ago because I am going fully active this time with the morel 9-5-1 3 ways up front. While I was waiting I got ms1000 sink and finished it. Part of me wants to put it on the shelf and rub it a couple of times a month with a diaper, but the devil on the other shoulder is dreaming of it mounted where my back seat use to be sink side up motorized so it will flip up 90 degrees to show the guts and the gear below it.

I dig that..it looks like you have a good start, and whats left is upholstery, paint and install? Are you thinking raspberry pi controller and a relay board mabye some rotary controllers and limit switches to automate or are you going to keep it simple?

I have a buddy that has made a living designing and building automation systems that I hope to tap. I am really not sure how to get that beast moving safely like I want....

It is a learning experience, but im sure you can tackle it. Just sit down with paper and pencil and start to dream big. I cant believe how cheap microcontrollers and linear actuators are now, and how much power even hobby servos have. Its insane.
