Re: Strippping my amp's finish (MPS-2500)

yeah, i'm a contractor by trade so A)know what you mean and B)I've learned that some of the non industrial "home owner" supplies aren't bad. I didn't think the citris stuff would work for this application (But I know it does a hell of good job on wood with urethane, latex, and oil paints!)...

Re: Strippping my amp's finish (MPS-2500)

Eric, I had contemplated that, I'm anxious to get it done, but I guess I'll show some restraint, and wait till I get it back.

But is tal-strip II ok to use, or will it eat the metal?

Strippping my amp's finish (MPS-2500)

I've been reading around and figured I should ask the jedi's here: I'm about to get this amp fixed, and figured i should refinish it before I send it off (to reduce the probability of me screwing something up during assembly). Is Tal-strip II ok to use to strip an MPS-2500? Someone painted it with a...

Re: MPS-2500 Serial Number location?

Yeah..... that pic was before it had a meltdown (and before I recapped it). After the power supply burned up, there was carbon all over that end of the beautiful gold board. I got most of it off, except a few spots, with %91 isopropyl OH. In fact, I almost "cleaned" off the serial number b...

Re: MPS-2500 Serial Number location?

thanks! My serial is so close to being the model number, I just thought it was a variation of said model. Anyway: is that what my amp is supposed to look like? yours is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy prettier than mine (even before it caught on fire). http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu44/interes...

MPS-2500 Serial Number location?

I got it 2nd hand. Last guy had it for 8 or more years, and the idiot before him painted it with the same paint/color as his car (present company accepted if you are that idiot). I don't have the metal bottom, only the plexi (AAMP service says it should be on the "bottom" (the plate I don'...

Re: MPS 2500 internal fuses

Well.... I don't know what I'm doing, and I burned up a recently acquired 2500. I did recap it, but it had some other issue. I'm getting an rma number from AAMP now. BUT, the end fuses are 30amp the wee ones are 10a GMA buss fuses. if it's of any help, i have several pictures of mine (before and aft...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

OK, Life has gotten in the way of living, and I've finally gotten around to fixing this dern thing. I cleaned it up as best I could with %91 isopropyl, and started reading components with my dmm. Looking at the attached photo: the green boxes are the general area where the fusible resistors are??? I...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Silly question:

would upgrading to higher rated (amps) fets and bjt's increase WRMS?

I probably shouldn't even be thinking bout it.

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

I'm thinking I should replace all the Fets, Bjt's, and similar items that had thermal pads holding them to the heatsink, as I really feel like that's why the other fets failed (physical damage from beating them off). I can't get a schema for the board, buy I'm still gonna try to get my guy to look i...

I had written a htm page, but can't attatch it. Here is the link to the photobucket folder with all the pics I took while stripping it apart. Best I can do. Take a look, and lemme know, please.

Re: Fried my MPS-2500, need schematic please

That's what I keep telling people, this amp was $1200+ back in the day, and (theoretically) it will still do what it did then, but I got it for almost nothin. Then again, it did burn up, so that'll cost me. I always tell my clients, "you are going to pay for "it" one way or another. E...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Thank you, Eric! In the even that I don't get the schema for my repair guy to look at, that description should be good enough. Actually, I know these amps are actually fairly simple as PCB's go, so with that description, any EEE101 student would be able to figure it out. I often live in a daydream w...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

my appologies, I had used what was already in there. I wouldn't ever recommend replacing a stock component's fuses with larger ones (except emergencies or ASAP temporary). I couldn't see the rating on the those fuses becuase of the holders, and hate trying to pop them out unnecessarily; I had assume...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Alright, i'm no EEE so i don't know nearly as much as most of ya'll. I know how to identify a transistor, resistor, etc. But with no block diagram or shema, I have very little idea which components are for what, so if you please, give a quick and dirty answer to the following: The 12 fets (most of w...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Eric, that just makes too much sense.

I'm gonna price up all the fets, just to see. The blown fets are less than $3 each, we'll see about all the others.

If I'm gonna replace all the fets, should or can I upgrade them?

Re: Fried my MPS-2500, need schematic please

At the risk of further reducing my rep here, I don't even know what those blown fets are for (power, signal, etc...). If I can get through this amp, I have a feeling I'll be WAYYYYYY better prepared for the next one; but I'd like for this guy to help me, this time, and he says he wants the schema. I...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Hmmmmm. Just thought about somethin. When I was disassembling the amp to recap it, I had to use the longest, thinnest filet knife I could find, and damn near pound the tip in behind the fets to get them unseated from the heat sink. Obviously, this could have damaged the fets internally, but what's t...

Fried my MPS-2500, need schematic please

I had started posting about this in another thread http://phoenixphorum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18314 but since it is no longer about just recapping my amp, I need the schematic, and to get a little more exposure, here I am posting. Pretty bad, about 8 of the fets opposite the external hookups e...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

I"m totally not offended at all. I've always viewed the battery fuse for protecting against overload of the line from the equipment or if it gets pinched/knocked and grounds out. OH, before I forget, i said the green LED was flashing. Is that signifigant (should it have been solid instead of fl...

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

No, I didn't test it before recapping, it hadn't been used in 5 or more years, and I was afraid they had degraded to the point of immediate failure. I had also looked carefully at the painted end plate to ensure proper polarity, and checked the user manual to make sure. I'll triple check, right now....

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

I'll strip it apart tonight, and post some more pics. On the upper left of one of the photo's it looks like the endplate is scorched behind one of my caps. If the cap failed (for whatever reason) could that have caused the fets to blow?

Re: Recapped my mps-2500

Let me start off by saying, Eric, you're right. I know better, and should have used a way small fuse to start. I had gone with the 200a on the battery terminal becuase I intend on running another amp and a few dc jacks in the back. I had also assumed in the event of a major malfunction one of the in...
