Re: What you guys running for home audio gear?

I'll chime in on this as I'm deep into a theater build for my current home. First, the equipment/gear: Amps: 3 Crown XLS 2000's for the L,C,R speakers (each one bridged mono to each speaker) 4 Crown XLS 2500's for the surrounds, rears, and the 4 Atmos ceiling speakers Processing: Marantz AV8802A Med...

Re: Old school car audio - RIP

First, I like this discussion. Fun! Now let's continue: Source: It's important.....to a point. I don't believe in using garbage in the signal chain, but I also don't believe you need a fiber optically connected unobtainium head unit/etc to achieve a great car audio system (emphasis on "car audi...

Re: Xenon Fan Replacement

I care....I want to know if it quiets things down.

My situation is more the sheer air flow sounds under the amp rack.

Curious, I thought I read it was a major undertaking to remove the fans from Xenons. From that picture you posted it looks easy.

Re: Old school car audio - RIP

depends on how you look at I it I guess I mean no the decks do not have the options they do today but then today if you wanted to get a true SQ based head unit, dead head/copper chassis where are you going to look? Want something other then a class D amp? Hope you like them small and black.... Old ...

Re: PPI amp repair

Unfortunately for you I do not have such parts. PPI's proprietary connectors are the main reason I avoid them when doing old school installs. Impossible parts to find.

Like I said, I too loved their products.....in 1999.

Re: Old school car audio - RIP

My thoughts on old school gear: In a nutshell, most of it sucked. Those of us who grew up in the 80's/90's have rose colored glasses I believe. Let's see: Amps were over a $1.00 a watt for quality amps. Proprietary connectors (or no connectors and just raw power wires to connect to). HUGE footprints...

Re: PPI amp repair

I'd add that amp as wall art to be honest. I used to be a big PPI fan (had Art series, then later the PowerClass series). Neither amp was really reliable nor easy to install (odd shapes/stupid molex plugs/etc). I will say the "fascination" if you will, was back in the day they were extreme...

Re: Xenon Fan Replacement

I'm curious how this will work out. Indeed I find that the fans on the Xenon's are quite loud. The main issue I see (with both our situations) is that the amp is the same space as the listener (trucks have that characteristic unless you do some bed mounted/blow through setup). In other words, you ar...

Re: 2015 F-150 Install

Been there done that with my Tundra. Same sentiments as you ("New truck, tearing it up, etc"). I am a firm believer that 95% + of "sound proofing" in a vehicle is achieved via the ccf and mlv combo. The CLD type products do very little (if any) in the noise reduction category. In...

Re: Xenon FAQ

No offense taken at all. I figured you misread the part about me using the x100.4 in bridge 8 ohm mode (the midbass drivers I use are from the proaudio world and are indeed 8 ohms...hence the need for so much power at an 8 ohm rating that I was searching for). I find on the whole PG was just a tad d...

Re: Xenon FAQ

You are referring to the circuit that "hides" the ohm load from a Xenon amp at startup so that it defaults to 4 ohm mode (if you will). I am not (nor would I recommend for very obvious reasons) that. Not to mention that "trick" is only on the mono Xenon amps. Short of me putting ...

Re: Xenon FAQ

Disclaimer: I use a Xenon 100.4 (bridged with both inputs receiving signal via y-cables) into 8 ohm loads. I also use a Xenon 1200.1 into a single 4 ohm load. Facts to correct: The stereo amps (x100.4, 200.4) initially power up with high fan mode then the fan settles down. The mono amps (x600.1, x12...

Re: 2015 F-150 Install

Define "serious" midbass? :) Check out my install in the "Project Serious" thread. I'm using two JBL 2118h 8" midbass in glass kick pods I made (they are massive and go way up under the dash). FYI...I have several pairs of these on a shelf that were professionally reconed. I...

Re: Project Serious

Update: So I had some tuning time yesterday in the garage (read: 6 hours). I temporarily rewired the dsp so that it would turn on without the high level inputs connected (in fact NO input signal connected). Results: Hiss still present at 1 foot or so from the horns. Next step, I disconnected the out...

Re: Sound deadening advice, options, deals, pricing.

Dwnrodeo: You hit the nail on the head. In fact, MOST new vehicles need little to no CLD tiles on the floor. I wish I took a picture of my truck's floor. There is no flex or vibration (that would be audible in my opinion) possible. Doors? Sure. Without speakers? Doubtful. In fact, I haven't put squa...

Re: Sound deadening advice, options, deals, pricing.

Just saw this. I've messed with the butyl (and asphalt crap when I was kid)/Dynamat stuff. Here is my take after finishing this part of the system in my current truck: They don't work........IF you are trying to stop ROAD NOISE. Huh? Yes, that's right, Dynamat type products do crap for this. I prove...

Re: Project Serious

No modifications were made to the oem head unit. All I did was unplug the stock amp (it's under the passenger seat) and via a wire harness adapter I ran the 4 wires for FL and FR to the high level input on the Helix DSP. Nothing fancy/no mods/no wiring modifications. I know I know...I need to test t...

Re: Project Serious

Will do. The signal from the hu should not be amplified already as I removed the factory amp and ran the high inputs right to the dsp. I think it's truly crap noise floor from the hu itself. I just need a few hours to do the necessary tests.

Re: Project Serious

I believe I am hearing amplified noise floor from the wonderful OEM headunit electronics. I'm feeding the OEM headunit (line level) into the Helix DSP. I listened to the headunit in my other Toyota (stock system, nothing touched) and I can hear the same hiss if I put my ear to the dash tweeters (jus...

Re: Project Serious

if you have noise with the motor off and gains down then a line driver probably will not help. It sounds like either your source or your DSP, basically something before the amp, that is noisy. Try a different source it can be as simple as your phone with a headphone to rca cable just for a quick te...

Re: Project Serious

I'm willing to give a line driver a shot. I have the gains on the 100.4 to the floor and I still hear a bit of noise floor through the 8's. Note this is with the vehicle not running, so it's not likely to be signal leak/infiltration/etc....it's flat out noise floor static. It will be a simple "...

Re: Project Serious

I would consider that, but believe it or not, the 750.2 is not enough juice for my midbass drivers. That amp is rated at 2 x 175 @ 4ohms. My midbass drivers are 8 ohms (JBL 2118h), so at best they would be seeing around 87.5 ish watts. I have the x100.4 bridged down to two channels which according t...

Re: Project Serious

Yes, I am tuning everything via the Helix dsp (eq, time delay, phase, xover, etc). That however did not address the stupidly loud level of volume disparity from the horns vs the rest of the system. Indeed the combination of level, amplitude, and phase are what I am using. I only had to cut the outpu...
