Re: Gain setting with DMM

If you really want to do this properly and maximize your clean output, you should use an oscilloscope and a range of sine tones to test and set the gain structure. Step One: Figure out the clipping volume point on your head unit. Keep all EQ and sound field processing off. Note that if you use these...

Re: Proper Power

I think people also need to look into the type of power supply their amp uses. Stiffening capacitors are essentially useless, especially when using an amplifier with a regulated power supply.

Looks like the standard black expandable sleeving. Check out ebay seller id: furryletters. I get all of mine from him, great product and price.

Re: Gold plated display amps with class A power

I actually like the look of the Elites. I wish they had clear plexi instead of smoked though. It's hard to see anything through it, so you waste that pretty board setup.

Re: Testing amps.

Just make sure you get a high enough wattage from the get go so that you can test more powerful amps down the road if desired. Oh, and remember that to get a true output measurement, you'll need to apply a load to all channels of the amp ;)

Re: How close does a line driver need to be?

Now that you guys mention it, it does seem rather odd PG (or anyone else) has not incorporated a line driver into their amps. It seems like it would be a rather easy thing to do. Maybe it's strictly the lure of grabbing a few extra bucks from the people who know their value in a system. L...

Re: How close does a line driver need to be?

I too have mine about 18 inches away from the deck. In a perfect world you could put it directly in front of the amp and it would not hurt anything but then again if this were a perfect world the amp would already have the driver built in, or would not need it from the decks output being high enoug...

Re: Any SQ head unit recommendations

If you plan to do a 2-way plus sub, then the DEH-80PRS would be a great choice. If not, the P99RS is certainly a terrific source unit. Plenty of processing built in and excellent sound. I'd still prefer an updated Clarion DRZ9255 with modern fetaures like blue tooth and ipod connectivity, but it doe...

Good point Drock. Plus, a gain stage is a gain stage. Whether you're increasing with a line driver or with the amp input gain.

Re: How close does a line driver need to be?

It doesn't necessarily need to be close to the source, but it's better for it to be from a signal strength standpoint. Part of the benefit of keeping it closer is to avoid reducing the S/N ratio over longer runs of signal wire by ramping up the voltage. That said, if you had very well shielded cable...

Re: How good is the ti600.4?

Nothing wrong with the Ti600.4 (or 800.4). They are class AB, have very nice build quality and sound nice and clean. The knock on them is that they are large (class AB), but you'd have to decide if that is a problem for your specific installation. I think $315 is steep for a used Ti600.4 You should ...

Re: General questions during the purchasing of audio equiptm

Do yourself a favor and get this speaker wire. It's nice quality AND low price. I've run this in many of my systems, including my competition SQ system. It's great stuff and Monoprice is fantastic.

Go with the white CL2 jacketed stuff.

Re: Car Stereo and home stereo wiring /cabling

I have seen cables that look like copper and are heavy like copper but measure three times the resistance of copper. I don't know what they put into these cheap crap cables, but they can be dangerous because they can't take as much current as you assume. It's likely the "hot" new alternat...

Re: Car Stereo and home stereo wiring /cabling

Wire is wire pretty much. The best deal is the best way to go. Just don't skimp and get smaller wire than you need. actually not nessesarily , ive pulled wire that has gotten so hot it melted the cover and caused damage and one year we did a test with your basic pawn shop wire using 15 ' of hat and...

Re: Car Stereo and home stereo wiring /cabling

I've had excellent results with the CL2 (white jacketed) speaker wire from Monoprice dot com which is about as cheap as you can get oxygen free copper speaker wire. I also use Welding Supply for my power wire. It's excellent quality and very low priced for how good it is.
