Re: Ported box question (stupid one actually)
Port tuning is based off of NET internal volume, it always is on any calculator. The only times a gross volume is used is typically where values are published and its in the manufacturers best interest to assume people suck at math and they do all of the calculations for ya. The volume number in Win...

Re: Price Check
I didn't say ALL were insane, he'll I think $65 is a lot but they are rare (& I think that's actually about what retail was?)
I think prices close to or almost double retail for used is insane, there is a ti one in our FS threads now for $140.
And it will probably be there for a while too.

Picked up a 2 fuse Ti finish distro off Ebay not too long ago for $65 as the "Buy It Now" price, and was brand new in the box.
A lot of the prices in this thread are insane, lol.

Re: Music
For starters, who gives a fuck about cassettes? If you were an audiophile back then, then well into the late 80's you were still buying 12" singles and/or LPs. It was the norm to have a single mixed and mastered specifically for the 12" release vs the cassette singles/album and LP if spac...

Hilarious vid dwnrodeo, which I think also covers the slow death of MusicTV and birth of MoronTV. You know, when MTV used to actually play only music videos. Beavis & Butthead, the only good thing of early 90's MTV, and it had music videos but made fun of them. Late 80's early 90's there was ver...

Re: Red this on the JL audio facebook page lately........
Eric, the discussion was on fused charge cables, as part of the big 3, where you would be introducing a new charge cable and if both ends should be fused or not. Both of my old Civics (92 & 93's) ran the charge cable to the fuse panel, not the battery, so they were protected. I think my Element ...

Re: Red this on the JL audio facebook page lately........
I'm just saying if fusing at the alt could potentially save the alt from self destructing if it's charge wire does short to ground, it may be worth consideration. I wouldn't think the cable would melt, but the alt maybe? Not something I'll loose any sleep over though. Fusing at the alternator sounds...

Re: Music
Any music pre dating CDs has very little bass You do realize that analog tape was the primary method of tracking in just about every major recording studio on earth well into the 90's, right? So even if the CD is rolled out in 1983, the recording and engineering practices didn't really change all t...

Re: Red this on the JL audio facebook page lately........
Shawn I believe the debate is not fusing in general, but fusing at the alt in addition to at the battery.
Protection from both ends, so if alt cable comes off the battery terminal a fuse at the alt will protect it from shorting against the chassis.

Re: Music
You people are crazy!! Late 80's ~ early 90's music was HORRIBLE, there is very little I'll listen to from that era. 70's & early 80's has some good music, but late 90's & on has had tremendous advancements in music. Old Techno fan + basshead? Try Dubstep, there are more than a grip of vario...

ah ok so if we have a number of failures that happen to happen at the same time, then its good to have your ground fused. I have to laugh a little bit though as I remember that we had discussed the big 3 upgrade here a while back(like last year). I got shit for sayin the power wire from the alt to ...

Re: Question about partially using passive xover
Few passive crossovers require all connections to maintain freq cutoffs, most run each section inside in parallel not series, so the speaker impedance makes the difference not if you have all of the speakers connected or not. I'd run the tweets & 4's off the passive, then the 8's & subs acti...

Re: Red this on the JL audio facebook page lately........
Fusing a ground makes sense, but I don't see it actually doing anything in reality. The idea is, say your amps have a dedicated ground to battery and that ground does not touch the chassis anywhere. Then what happens if your oem chassis ground fails (vibrates loose or corrodes badly enough) your ent...

didn't know paypal shipped now.... He said up above he didn't insure it or send it priority. By chance do you have the customs form you would have filled out to send it? When someone pays for something not as a gift, PayPal gives you the option to ship, which runs you through either USPS or UPS (yo...

Re: Buyer Beware - az_passat
Did you ship through paypal? Did you get a tracking number for the package? Ive had something like this happen to me, and all I needed was a tracking number to prove I shipped their package, which happened to show the item had delivered, no delivery signature required. It has been a while since, but...
Re: score

Re: Red this on the JL audio facebook page lately........
People often neglect ground connections, and seem to forget that the power and ground are of equal importance. People spend big bucks on huge power wire, and Ive seen countless installs with such wire & amp grounds connected to seat bolts & shit, where there is very little direct metal conne...

Re: Ported vs Sealed, lets open this can of worms. lol
I don't really see why you would want to do a thermal analysis on a box as a 3D model, but I could see doing some air flow analysis on its port features. Are you using thermal analysis in some way to gain flow data? I have never done any thermal analysis on anything, but do have experience with str...

Re: Ported vs Sealed, lets open this can of worms. lol
So it seems a lot of us are on some common ground for a change. It's amazing what a little cool head debate can iron out. I think most of the time internet bickering is just minor miscommunication & semantics with a little too much emotion. I think maybe the modeling portion is confusing. For b...

I think you should add one more negative to a ported box... 4. Not as "tight" of sound. The only problem with my number 4 on your list is "tight" is pretty obscure. It is also pretty subjective. All I know personally is there is a difference in sound to a sealed box, that I gene...

OK then, so back to the original point of the whole thread? I still argue that ported boxes are not better than sealed boxes, and sealed boxes are not better than ported ones. Each has its applications, and everyone is entitled to their own choice of going with sealed or ported. Why am I so wrong w...
