Re: Phoenix Gold xs4600 repair help

If you are testing the amplifier outside the heat sink then that will cause any device that is/was attached to the sink to fail.

Re: Mps2500 burnt resistor

Well one amplifier is 500watts (the mps2500) and the other is 1200watts, so of course you'll notice a difference in output. How do you know the resistor is burnt? Did you ohm it with a meter? Replacing a resistor is as easy as replacing a capacitor, so if you can do one you can do the other. I under...

Re: ms2240 cap info

You might as well then remove all the mosfets, and test the bridge rectifier diodes (two devices attached to the sink, next to the fets). If the rectifier diodes are shorted then those devices will have to be replaced as well as the mosfets and perhaps the protection diode.

Re: ms2240 cap info

If D9 has current flow both ways (test leads flipped) then it's bad.

By same two pins you are talking about the middle pin and the one on the right (3rd pin)?

Also did you check the diode that was near the transformer?

Re: ms2240 cap info

Yes check the fets for shorts, if one of them has a short on all between all three pins then go ahead and remove it and retest the remaining fets. There is also a large diode that is in parallel to the B+ and ground right near the transformer, remove from circuit and test as well to see if current f...

Re: Phoenix Gold xs4600 repair help

28v on the primary or secondary caps? If measuring the rails (secondary) voltage then I go right to the center pin of the rectifiers. You should have same positive and negative voltage on the rails when using secondary ground as a reference point. Can you be a bit more specific as far as which two c...

Re: Phoenix Gold xs4600 repair help

Okay that's a clear indicator that there is an issue in the xover circuit, next is to see if the noise is there only in the LP or HP or both. There are several components (op amps and resistors) that make up the xover filters, having a bench scope will help find what component is causing the squeal.

Re: ms2240 cap info

You may have a bit of a hard time removing the devices that are attached to the heat sink, use the largest allen key you can fit in the device's screw/mounting hole and slowly pry the allen key towards the center of the board (downward). Just enough to separate the device from the sink, don't bend i...

Re: Phoenix Gold xs4600 repair help

There could be an issue with the xover-preamp board, is the squealing noise coming from one channel (bad channel?) or all channels? Does the noise increase if xover is bypassed?

Also what channel is shorted/bad?

Re: Phoenix Gold xs4600 repair help

Best bet is to replace all the diodes and transistors as well as the two main outptut mosfets in that channel. You'll spend about 5-6 bucks in all the components needed in one channel and will pretty much guarantee a successful repair. Here's a link to the LPL44 info. http://download.phoenixphorum.c...

Re: ms2240 cap info

Remove the board completely then check them again, perhaps there was a short between the chassis and device. If Q9 is still showing a short then remove it completely and check out the remaining 3 (there's a chance you'll have more than one shorted fet, best to replace all four). Once removed from th...

Re: ms2240 cap info

Check the middle pin of the fets in the power supply with one of the test leads on the chassis ground. Is there any shorts or low resistance between them? Perhaps of one of the silpads got damage and the fella who recapped it just didn't know or bother.

Re: ms2240 cap info

D8-D9 are the part of the bridge rectifier (these rarely fail), the fets Q7-10 should not have any shorts between the middle pin and either outer leg/pins. Are you checking it with the dmm set to ohm or diode mode?

Re: ms2240 cap info

Right now you are not looking for voltage you are looking for shorts (dead shorts) between the pins of each device, no power applied to the amplifier. I asked about the fuse because I don't know if you have a current meter/clamp and wanted to know if there was excessive current draw upon trying to p...

Check the fets and fet gate resistors in the power supply, check for any shorted output devices (mounted on the heat sink).

Re: ms2240 cap info

It's already recapped, the rails are original but are not 16v are 25v. I saw this amp as soon as it was posted a week ago for 140.00 and offered the seller 120.00 for it and he never did replied (so kinda bummed out that he ended up listening for 120.00 without any notice lol, oh well). I can say th...

Doubt it...because that's one of gold plexi screw they left on the amp...the one right on the switch.

Re: strapping

Those sockets on MS series amps are so the power supply PWM controllers can all switch at the same time. One amp becomes the master, and the others all use the masters clock signal. This is to help with AM radio reception (which was a concern back in the day). It has absolutely nothing to do with t...

Nope...it was not for strapping amps together for more power just to sync the switching power supplies (by allowing one amplifier's PWM to run all amps that are strapped together).

And that is why am hesitant to take any boards by themselves for repair.
