Looking for a truck....hmmmmm

Post by Audiophiliac »

Its been a while, and lots has been going on. Bought a house. Sold my Jeep, sold my VW, bought another VW, that VW died, now I am looking for a truck I think.

I want an old Chevy. There are 3 that are local that look nice. Going to look at all 3 in person this week.

1. '68 3/4 ton 2wd 454/TH400 that is baby blue and from the pics looks really straight.

2. '71 that looks really straight and is in grey primer with a recently rebuilt motor....not sure what...probably 350.

3. '85 K30 one ton 4x4 454/TH400 that is all original minus headers, dbl. roller timing chain, a 2" lift and 33" tires and a CD player. It is a nice blue color....body is near perfect and it has 144,000 original miles. TH400 completely rebuilt 22k ago.

I think I would get more use out of the 4x4. The 2wd would probably lead me down a road of spending way too much money on it...because I would want a super loud, super fast, super clean street truck....and that just takes time and cash. The 4x4 would probably stay pretty much as it is. It has AC and power everything...which is a bonus. I can take it up in the hills for camping and stuff. So I think I have already made up my mind, but still not 100% sure. The 4x4 will cost me more initially... I am sure I can haggle with the guy some though. But I think in the long run, it will be less expensive to drive.

This will be my daily driver until I fix the VW or sell it and get something else to tool around in. I do not want to drive 15 miles round trip to work and back and get maybe 10 mpg for too long. :)

Hopefully I can get motivated to put some kind of a system in the truck and use some of the wire I have collected and get some more old school PG to toy with. :) Keep an eye out.

I'd say #2 . The only issue with most old trucks is the gas tank behind the seat. I like older vehicles for the ease of repair and cheap parts. The lack of emissions is always nice too.

I'd also be wary of any behicle that already has performance mods. Ya might get lucky and get a deal on the other hand you might be getting somethign thats been beat on hard. Never trust the seller of a used vehicle to tell you the truth. For some reason when it comes to craigslist or sellign a car normally honest people think its okay to lie or omit.

I drive a 2wd for my work truck and am constantly wishing it was a 4wd. IF I had a choice I would go 4wd all the way.

I like #1 and 3. My friend had a beater '77 2wd with a 454 and turbo 400. We built the engine to the tune of 500hp or so... what a sleeper that was! Of course the brakes were screwed and the seats weren't bolted to the floor and and and... but it was still a crazy old beast :D

I do not NEED a 4x4. This will be a weekend toy mostly and something to haul stuff around in. I plan on buying another jeep down the road to go play in the rocks with. And I will also fix the VW or get another daily driver.

We will see. Going to look at the 4x4 today and see if it impresses me enough. But something tells me I will end up with one of the others. :)
