So I dropped into a store today that carries PG...

Post by fuzzysnuggleduck »

I saw this place on my way home from work one day with a big Phoenix Gold logo in the window (the RCA logo no less) so I decided one of these days I was going to have to check it out.

The place is called "Speaker City" (www.speakercity.ca).

From the looks of it, it's a pretty normal audio shop with a decent focus on mobile audio and installations. They have a normal two-three car install bay in the back. I dropped in to check out their PG and the store in general I guess.

I talked to one of the sales/installers (they're all 20-35 year old sales/installers as far as I can tell) and told him why I was there (PG love baby!). At that point he was like "yeah... we don't have much PG anymore", yadda, yadda, yadda. He points me to some Xenon and Ti subs, a display case with some accessories and tells me they have just a couple PG amps left upstairs.

So, as I'm looking at the subs and the accessories I notice they have a Ti Basscube for sale... price?... wait for it... $500. My jaw fucking dropped. Tantrum T5DD, $250. Gah. Insanity.

Now, when I looked at pricing on everything else in the store it all started to make sense. Holy fuck does audio gear ever cost a lot for those people who don't bother educating themselves and putting in some time to find the deals. I simply cannot believe how much people pay to buy this stuff and have it installed, it's freaking absurd! However, this is life.

Then I started thinking about how much my system would have cost in the 90s if I bought it all from a shop and had them do the install. I don't even want to go there. It's too sick to think about.

Anyways, just thought I'd report on finding a pseudo-PG dealer in the city and how fucking absurd the markup is (yet, apparently this is the norm).

Haven't you ever come with me to soundsaround before?

The whole reason I got into PG in the first place... $500 for a single Ti10 woofer. I went on eBay and bought the pair for $250 shipped.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It sucks those places can't really exist AND provide good pricing to the customer. It would be nice if shop could survive and make people sweet deals but that's not how it works in this business (or any really!)

Oh well. I'm more interested in the older gear anyways ;)

I mean, I know that's what the stuff retailed for in my head but for whatever reason it's still shocking every time I think about it.

Keep in mind these are all sale/blowout prices too. The prices are even all the way across the board too... it's not just one Canadian PG dealer, it's all of them.

Yep. The one here in Ottawa will not budge. He has a few older items sitting in his case. Will not move on pricing.
Ti Bass Cube - $239 CAD.
AC Epicenter - $259 CAD.
Knobber.
The only stupid question is the one not asked .......

Your not alone in Canada. I guess considering how much PG gear is here in TX we could be considered a foreign country also.

There is a PG dealer in Houston that has a X1200.1 on SALE for $500.   He has other Xenon pieces, but I was so pissed I didn't bother to ask.

I also was quoted 3 different prices by different associates on other PG stuff. This shop has/had a spot in a flea market and was selling some of their PG stuff through it.

I sure do miss the days of the Zeb.com or sounddomain.com

My MS2125's costed $1848 a piece back in 1994....
I was nervous as hell, when I actually ordered them, consuming nearly all of my savings.... :?
Only after making an agreement with the dealer, at which shop our whole car-audio club bought all it's stuff, were they affordable enough.
I was however forbidden to tell others howmuch I paid for them, and I did buy four at the same time.
Also I had to agree to use them in my car and attend to every sound-off that next year.
Idea? There's no better add for a audio-retailer than having a winner at a show!

I did pay about $1350 (new) for my first MS2125 here in Norway in 1993, and the only amp that was "bigger" and more attracted at that time - was the Frank Amp'n Stein. They kept that price untill the M-series took over the market (and the MS disappeared... :( )

Jeezuz... I remember the sight of the Frank in the wooden box back in those days (*dreaming...*). Frank had a price of $3000 at that time here in Norway.

The SOFAS I do not know the price of. I have never seen one either. but I REALLY want to buy one to my collection...

(So tips of a SOFAS for sale would be nice  )
