anyone else think a hover craft would be fun?

Post by Jacampb2 »

Just bored, and thinking about building one. I have a couple of decent size small engines around. A 6hp vertical, and several different options for horizontal :D

Been looking at stuff on line, and some of the stuff is stupid simple. I am thinking a foam and birch frame all glassed up pretty. It would be a blast on the great lakes here...

I'm pretty sure that I am crazy... I would likely never use it much, but it is something I have wanted to do since I was a kid. Maybe once I get the bronco done and out of my shop I will start on one. Ultimate goal would be to someday build a ground effect craft.

Nuts-or-Not?

Later,
J

Yup, they float on a "air bearing" low friction cushion of air. A ground effect craft actually is based on a HC but includes a short wing span and they can typically hit 75Mph and get about 10 feet off the ground/water. It'd be super-de-duper-fucking-fun :)

A fan boat might be easier and almost as fun. I've seen a few on Superior
flying across the water and then going up on the beach.

Back in my physics class in High School we build a hovercraft with one of those backpack style leaf blowers. It was pretty fun, but you had to stand on the platform and usually that ended with you falling off and busting your ass.

If you look at his buggy, you'll know he doesn't skimp on roll cages.

Alright :D Ejector seat for the buddy then. Got it!

If I do build one, it will be nothing ridiculous at first, hopefully 50mph or so :)

From what I have found on line, there are lots of guys building small rectangular HC's that use a leaf blower for lift and weed whacker engine for thrust, and are hitting the 25mph mark. I think 50mph ought to be reasonable goal for the first one.

On the bright side, It'll always have value. If you build it and it sits, you could sell that thing in a heartbeat. Or trade it for MS gear.... :metal:
