So who likes the new metallica cd I've been listening to it for a couple days now and like a few songs but undecided on others. I burned it onto a cd to give to a buddy I preordered mine so will get it anyway
P.S. I know it doesn't come out until the 12th for retail but if you know where to look its a 15 minute download.

Don't get me wrong I am huge metallica fan I got their first album in 1984 and haven't stopped listening to any of them since except for st. anger that piece of musical crap got played once and stuck in the case. The songs aren't that bad on st.anger its the mixing it sounds like it was recorded in a tin room and lars drums sound like he is using metal garbage cans. Even after lars pissed off the world with his napster crap I still stuck by metallica oddly enough metallica cds are the only cds I buy now everything else I download or listen to XM. Anyway I have been listening to mandatory metallica on XM 51 now for almost a month I haven't changed the channel and won't until sept. 30th when its done.
Greg, I heard the same.
I'll be going out to BB on Friday (the 12th) of all days to get it.
But regardless, Linky???? to said download.
St. Anger was by far their worst album. A lot agree. A friend of mine bought it and was listening to it on his way somewhere and hated it so much he rolled down the window and tossed it out. The Unnamed feeling wasa the best song on that album.
I hope it's torwards the ...And justice for all/Black album sound.
I've seen them 3X in concert and if this album is good, well even if it's not, I'll def. go see them again.
I singed up on their email page under Metallimike@metallica.com Haven't been able to sign in to that account for quit some time now. ??Why??

I dont really mind this album that much. I am not really a metallica fan though. I like the black album, and the S&M one, but other than that they just arent my style.
That being said, the new cd is better than I expected. Although, I think having every song 7+ minutes long is a little bit much. 'the day that never ends' sounds more like the song that never ends. They just keep on going and going.

It's METALLICA............
I havent heard the new album yet either but I've been told it's good.

I've heard 2 songs off it so far and I've enjoyed them both.
That said, I am a Metallica fan, and may be a bit biased. I think their best album to date is "Load" to be honest. it may not be thrash metal, but it's musically better than anything they've done before or since.
"Bleeding Me" will remain my favorite Metallica song with "Ronnie" being a close second, both from "Load"

Harvester of sorrow from the ...And justice for all album would have to be my all time Metallica song. The drums just "do it" for me.

It's not so much about them being soft or anything like that. I'm not worried about how hardcore they are, they can shop at Armani all they want! It's just that the one song I heard sounded like it could have been some dude in his basement fucking around on Reason over a few afternoons, not organic or "real" at all.
That said, I didn't bother listening to the composition very much, just how it "sounded" and how it "felt".
Almost seemed to me like someone else was trying to pretend they were Metallica.
Just a quick observation, I won't judge the album by the one song.

I still say that the 'Justice' album has one of the best kick drum recordings evaaaaar!smgreen20 wrote:Harvester of sorrow from the ...And justice for all album would have to be my all time Metallica song. The drums just "do it" for me.
I'm an old school Metallica fan. When 'Kill'em All' was out, it was the start of a new age of metal for me. Before then it was Judas Priest, Iron Maiden(orig line-up of coarse) and the like, mingled with some Sex Pistols. When 'Ride the Lightning' came out it was THE album and 'Fade to Black' is still one of my all time favorites. Then came 'Master of Puppets' and I was dumbstruck! Literally. I can remember (barely

Meh, I haven't liked Metallica much since Master of Puppets. I still have an original press of Ride the Lightning. Gotta love those oldschool high dynamic range recordings! The remastered version I got sounds like shit; they compressed the hell out of it! Boy, that sure sounds better. Thanks, Mr. Producer!

Contrary to popular opinion, I like St. Anger. (I am a Metallica fan....duh). Its raw...pissed off...angry...in your face...garage metal.
The "unrefined" sound...or lack of processing which is basically what it was...and even the unorthodox snare drum sound (which was created by simply disconnecting the "snare" from the bottom of the drum), was intentional.
If you were to record a live session where all the guys were in one room playing, that is pretty much what you would end up with. No sound booths. No tracking over and over and over waiting for the perfect take....
I also liked Load a lot! It really was a step away from the "standard" Metallica sound we were all used too. And it showed us that hey these guys can do more than power cords, blistering solos, and double bass.
My favorite album? ...And Justice For All of course.
But I can appreciate anything and everything they have come up with to date.
I just dont get how people can seem so personally butt-hurt if a band makes music they dont like. Like Metallica made a funny snare sound just to piss you off.
If you dont like it, go put on Master Of Puppets or J.T. and enjoy it. They are Metallica and can do whatever they want. No obligation to people who dont like their music. They dont have to make everyone happy. They can do what they want. Even if no one likes it.
P.S.....if you havent seen "Some Kind Of Monster" (Metallica documentary), watch it. Gives some insight into the making of St. Anger and why it turned out how it did.

I like all their albums too, but it's (St.A) my least favorite of their 200 albums.
I have the "Some kind of monster" on DVD and have watched all 14+ hrs of it.
It shows some inside stuff concerning Dave Mustanes dismissal of the group too.
As for their new album I'm going to have to wait for it tomorrow. I don't know what type of program to use to open torrent files. I DL'ed uTorrent and started to open one, but somethings not right with it. I have cable internet and it was saying it would take 1 week 3 days to finish the DL. WTF?!

The black album was the last one I really liked, although it was a big departure from their previous records. I saw them in 1988 at the LA Coliseum on the Monsters of Rock tour (Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, VH) and they totally stole the show. As soon as they started playing it was total anarchy bordering on a riot. 90,000 people running wild, cool!.
I agree that there's a cetain point at which a band becomes so popular that they are given 'free riegn' to produce what they like without caring whether you like it or not. But as the documentary reviels, it wasn't a case of doing what ever they wanted. They clearly were trying to produce something that was more mainstream. Arguing over whether they would continue to put guitar leads in thier songs because no one else does that anymore. Stressing over vocal capabilities bla bla bla.Audiophiliac wrote: I just dont get how people can seem so personally butt-hurt if a band makes music they dont like. If a no-name band came along and produced 'Load' would I like them? Probably. But no more then any other band I somewhat like but never bought any of thier music. It's disappointing because it's not what you've come to expect from them. And they certainly aren't the first band to change direction later in thier careers. And they aren't the first to loose thier original fans doing so and ultimately faded away just for the sake of some limited commercial success.
Who can forget the famous quote 'ya we sold out ... we sold out of every ticket at every show on the tour'.

It's hard to please everyone all of the time, at least they take the chances, if it's a hit, great, if not, they go back to the drawing board listening to feedback from the fans.
Obviously they listened to the fans when St. Anger tanked. Both shows I happened to go to when St. Anger was in full swing, at one show they played two songs, the other show one song....James asks,"do you wanna hear new sh** or old sh**" to which the crowd screamed "old sh**" and they did just that, they played all the older stuff.
If the new disc has an older sound to it then that would lend itself to the fact that they listened to their fans.
St. Anger the CD sounded muddy and muffled...the odd thing though was the DVD that came along with it sounded fine so much so that I ripped the audio from the DVD down to CD just so I could listen to it.

After listening to it straight since I got it yesterday at 10:00 am I'm left feeling empty and somewhat disappointed.
Their solo song "Suicide & redemption" was a let down. Some riffs are kick ass, but it's not their typical SLOW, heavy sound that "Orion" & "The call of Ktulu" is.
Hatfield's voice is just not right either. It's as if he's talking really loud into the mic, not screaming/yelling or singing in some of the songs. That ruins the songs for me.
The guitar riffs are fast and all of them are good, they're just not used together right. It gives the sings an "all over the place" feel. Their not stationed to long in any one sound. The length of the songs are what Metallica used to be like so that is welcome.
Over all, It ranks above St. Anger, but it doesn't rank any higher then that. It's a mixture of Kill' em all, St. Anger and as for the drums ...and justice for all. Some songs have a Damage Plan sound to them which isn't Metallicas sound. The album isn't as Harmonious as their first 8 or so albums and that doesn't apeal to me.
I'm still a huge Metallica fan and always will be and will continue to buy all of their stuff. I've seen them 3X and would do so again and again.
There are still some good songs on here. "The day that never comes" and "The unforgiven III" have a good all around sound to them. Hell, they even went w/a piano remanisent of the S&M album. I dig that a lot.
I rate it a 6.5/10. They need Bob Rock Back and Rick Rubin needs not to be the Producer of their stuff ever again. WB as the record label????

I love the album! However the production is HORRID. There is widespread discontent about the sound quality of the album. WAY WAY WAY too much compression/limiting going on. Hopefully it was all intentional.....otherwise there will be people fired and refunds or exchanges for a re-release that is "fixed".
But its Metallica and I love it! It will be in my car and jeep for at least a few weeks....long enough to memorize all the songs.
