I temporarily disabled the mail server, because it is acting up right now.

I assume the error you got was
Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 450 Server configuration problem

DEBUG MODE

Line : 165
File : smtp.php
Some people choose to be notified by email if a thread is posted into, or if they get a private message. So, when you send a private message, it will go to the mail server to send them a notification. If the mail server is having a shit fit, then it will spit out this error. This does not mean there is a forum problem, just that the mail cannot be sent. So, if you see this message after you post, it is safe to ignore it.

I will try to figure out what the fuck is going on with the mail server so that I can resolve the issue.

There is also this problem occasionally:
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysql.stipud.com' (4) in /home/.lillie/stipud/phoenixphorum.com/db/mysql4.php on line 48

Warning: mysql_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/.lillie/stipud/phoenixphorum.com/db/mysql4.php on line 330

Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/.lillie/stipud/phoenixphorum.com/db/mysql4.php on line 331
phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database
This means the database server (which stores all the forum messages) is down. If this occurs, try back in 5 minutes or so. I do not control when the servers go up and down, but it happens sometimes. Our hosting is shared with many other websites, so problems can and do occur more frequently than if we were run on our own webserver. Unfortunately this is way more expensive than I can afford. However, the problems tend to resolve themselves pretty quickly with the great administration staff who provide my hosting, so it is typically not something you can't cope with.

Tom summed it up excellently.

On a side node, techslaves.org, a kind of sister or brother site to Phoenix Phorum, has also been having temporary connection problems with the SQL server. This is only relevant because we are hosted on the same physical host.

I supplied some support tickets to my webhost. Here is a message I got on the support page:
********* Critical Announcement *********

Unfortunately, we're still experiencing network problems due to the
outage yesterday (see posts below). It consists of random network drop
outs that is affecting various services, including the web (slow load
or can't load at all from time to time), mail (can't connect, can't
send or mail delay due to backed up junk mail machines) and mysql. The
admins are working on containing it, and we'll be posting updates as
soon as we know further. We apologize for all inconvenience this may
be causing, and appreciate your continued patience and understanding.

They are aware of the mail server and frequent database outages, and are working hard on it. It seems like even if we had a dedicated server this problem would still affect us.

Webhost reports everything is a-o-k, so I re-enabled the mail service again. Everything should be back to normal.
