Any one had thier ID/paypal/accounts stolen?

Post by joyride »

I've been getting my bank account milked for the past week for over $2k. I've tried changing everything, calling everyone, doing everything I can, but he still keeps getting me somehow. It started with just my email, then he got my ebay, then my paypal. He then made some amazon transaction (started a new account) for over $900. The bank said they would put a stop on the card, and he is still pulling money out! Paypal of course said they could do nothing about it, and they are reviewing the charges (they were originally flagged as suspiscious, so I dont know why they are reviewing them...they already know it was fraud). They said it would take 10 or so day sto get money back. Today this asshole hit me up from playstation network and some paybycash.com pages.

Anyone else have any ideas on what to do to stop this? Anyone been through this before? I already put an alert on my credit, so Im hoping that wont be affected. I called the bank immediately and asked why money was being pulled out even after calling them days ago. She said I had to go to a branch. I told her to close the account, stop it completely, do whatever to keep money from even moving. she told me I had to go to a branch to do that! God help you if it happens after 5, 'cause apparently you are fucked if that happens.

That's why I like our banking system. They're open 24/7/. My bank even calls when I spend out of routine to confirm I'm the buyer. My bank eats every incurred cost due to fraud, regardless of when it was reported. I would demand the same if I was you.

What's Avira?

Good luck.
The only stupid question is the one not asked .......

this has happened to me a couple times now, my bank has always returned the money taken immediatly, all i had to do was fill out their report and go over all transactions with them and tell them which were mine and which were not.
by the time i waled out of the bank i had all my money returned to me.
its a inconvenience but at this point there is not much you can do!

also you should change all passwords at least once a month and never make any 2 the same

Its been a pain, and Paypal isnt helping me out much. I said screw it and decided to just reformat the laptop, closed my accounts and made completely new ones, and have severed all my email accounts. I have filed disputes with the bank, so that should all be taken care of soon.

Paypal however, is being a bit more difficult. Turns out they activated my account even though I told them it has been taken over and I wanted it locked/suspended/stopped. They are 'reviewing' over $2k worth of fraud transactions. However, in an a-hole effort to keep making money, they deposit the refunds into my paypal account and not a bank. See anything wrong with this? How hard is it to figure out that the second the money goes into the account, it will be stolen right out again.

And that asshole stole my playstation account! now I have to start a new one, and they cannot transfer the games (add ons) I purchased. I even bought one the night before and played it for 5 minutes. Guess I have to spend another $30 for that.

Do you use passwords that are the same ?

Also, NEVER click on a link......doesn't matter who posted it, or sent it to you....never click on a link, copy and paste it. Like the auctions of interest section here where people post links to Ebay listings and Craigslist listings....ya, I never click those.

We should have all learned our lesson about following links after the great earth quake of '09 that fowler caused...

Are you on fagbook/myspace? I hear they are great ways for hackers to get into your shit!

you can try to change your IP address also check to see if your firewall has been disarmed hackers can disarm firewalls now. also you can try a free program called [glary registry repair] hackers can also screw up you registry when they steal your info. and also you may try another free program called [remove it pro] it finds viruses that avira cant find and removes them.

whats the difference? difference from copy/pasting it, and clicking it- DOESNT it still bring to you the site? AND what about when people use the "[u r l = www. x x x . c o m ] click here [/UR1]" method???
how do you copy/paste it then if you dont actually see the link-?

im confused... and yes, yes once again.

BUT will say this, the more i hear eric raving about the mac book pro- i have been looking into one for myself & family.

I don't click those at all, if there is no URL....and it just says clicky, or click here.....I ain't touching it....this is why you don't click links.

It's called masking, making a url look like something when it's really something else.

For example, say I post

http://phoenixphorum.com/

and you click on that, and it takes you to the page......meanwhile I now know your IP address, OS, and a number of other things.

If you copy and paste into the browser, then you can't mask it.

I read recently that with the popularity of macs now that hackers were now finding ways into their systems. I think the days of saying"I have a mac so I am safe" are catching up closer and closer to you..

and to be honest the only time I have had a problem with identity theft was after some asshole broke into my truck while I was out mountian biking and stole my wallet. The bank called me before I even got home to tear apart my truck and confirm it was gone to tell me they noticed some strange transactions at the mall up the street. I have no idea how BOA knew I was not shopping at abercrombie and fitch but they did and shut it down. 24 hrs later they returned all the money that was spent, switched cc#s and never had another issue. I do ALL my banking online between 2 different accounts and spend alot of time online... Think of your pointer like yer dick and don't put it in places where it doesn't belong or where you are unsure if it belongs and you will be fine. Fagbook and all the networking sites have already told us they are a hackers dream and I think the use of it and the popularity of id theft is not just happening on its own.....

If you are using any type of chat software, you're not safe....doesn't matter if you have a mac, pc, laptop....once you enter into a chat with someone all your info is up for grabs..i.e..skype..this is also where they will disable your firewall...and yes it can be done, you can disable someone's firewall and all their virus software. It can be done using yahoo's chat software, it can be done very easily with any java application. If you have a computer and it is able to access the internet, I would say you're not safe......even if you think you are. All it takes is a chat or a couple emails, you can also create a ( fake ) website, paste the link to the person you are after....once they click it, it will take them to a error 404 page.....but you will have now gained all their computer info and what not. Needless to say, there's more than one way to skin a cat......and the guys who are after your info know all of them....people should really keep these kinds of things in mind when browsing the net.

Macs are safer because of the security model that they are designed after. This is one of the reason why the are safer than windows. BUT, if anyone puts in a password anytime the OS asks for it (or in the case of the windows and it's super tight security, just press the button, no password needed) without reading or thinking about why or what is asking for your password (or to press a button), then the security is useless. I HATE windows "security". If a program wants access, just press the OK button? Really? No password? That's secure for sure! At least with a password a functional person has to be on the other end. This is what happens to I would say about 75% or people. They just press the button or enter the password and don't think about it or read what the OS is telling you, and then all of a sudden you have program installed and you have no idea how they got there.

The other reason why macs have more security is because of the "sand boxing" that takes place to keep apps in their own memory so they aren't open to a buffer overrun attack, or that type of attack. Windows 7 finally started doing this more and more, but macs have been doing it for years. Random memory addressing has also helped out a lot, and both mac and windows have come a long ways on that front.

There's more reasons why macs are more secure than windows, but those are a few. There will always be programs that can be hacked, holes that will be found, but it's how the OS handles those apps that really matter, and quite frankly the reason why windows blows is because it's not very good at handling runaway apps. This is not to say OS X is perfect, it was hacked just as fast, if not faster than the windows computer due to a safari vulnerability at a blackhat hacking contest recently. So OS X isn't the greatest when a hacker sits down to attack it, but it does do better to keep script kiddies away, and from people getting your info easily without having to work at it. With enough time, nothing is safe, all you can do is make you shit harder to get than the person next to you, so the thief will go for the person next to you, instead of you ;)

I guess one could throw linux in the same ring as OS X. I have run both OS X and linux for years without any viruses. Ya, there are viruses for linux, but you need a password to get to my files. In fact my router is a linux box running gentoo with my own custom firewall script. Has that box ever been hacked? No. It runs 24/7 and has for 3 years now acting as my firewall running a full os, and it has never been hacked. So if you do things correctly, this applies to windows as well, you can be safe and not get hacked, it just takes some practice.

Back on topic... I had my hotmail account hacked a few years ago, and they got into my paypal because I used the same password. Once they got into paypal, they tried to transfer $1500 on a credit card that was maxed out and it was declined. I then promptly changed my paypal password and removed my CC info from paypal. I know use a different password for email and a different password for bank/money dealings on the internet. That's not happening to me again! Hopefully you can get this figured out! It totally sucks to have to deal with that crap. Good luck man!

This would really only apply with software firewalls running on the OS that is surfing the net. I would like to see someone turn off my firewall running on my linux box. Good luck! I also have a setup that is a little above what most people have/need. There is no way that anything is being disabled if you have some sort of hardware firewall device, like a "wireless router". As long as NAT is involved, you have a lot more protection. BUT once you open any ports up, you make yourself vulnerable. The only ports I have open are ports that I know have programs behind them that are tried and true, SSH, HTTP, FTP, VPN, those sort of things that can stand up to attacks, anything else is not open by default. As soon as ports are opened up, you open yourself up to an attack. The question is, how is the application/os going to be able to handle that attack.

I will also agree that alot of it has to do with the surfer, not really the OS or the hardware the surfer is using. The hardware can only protect you from the human element so much. You can still get scammed even with the best hardware protection money can buy.
