jesus that reminds me of the cleanroom at intel.... The floors had holes it in because they force air out of the ceiling and suck it up from the floor so that any random particle that made it past the gowns would not float around and end up on a wafer. It was a class 1 clean room with full gowns and at the most our nose/eyes showing. Because of the gloves we had to wear and the itty bitty screws it was not at all uncommong to hear one hit the subfloor and it be followed by cursing....

should be "misc small sparts"
Most recent fix was a CD player eject issue, gear drive cover tabs were broken.
Got the new cover installed, screws in place....then there was a tiny spring laying on the table......FUCK
Had no idea where it went, looked all over the unit, then looked at the service manual.
Eventually found out where it went, but what a PITA.

I have also lost either small parts or tools in my immediate working area before. Frantic searching of the same places over and over again because it seems impossible you would have placed the part/tool anywhere else. Yep, that feeling.

often when I work, I will just plop down in the middle of the floor and work right there. AFter a while I have a couple tools or parts of things I am working on that will just not be around me even though I have not stood up......

That missing screw is on the table in the other room where you answered the phone...... but you will only find it the day after, when the phone rings.
That special brake-bleeding wrench which dissappeared .....returned to my bench after a year. The customer brought his car in for the yearly checkup. The wrench was still there on one of the bleeding-screws.
While test-driving the car you heard something hit the pavement and bounce in the grass, but you did not think about it anymore. After a few days someone at the shop aks you about his screwdriver that he loaned you.
Moral of these story's; when I'm really old I'm gonna write a book. [due soon].
