Screw Thomas Knight and his $3k unit !

The design is finished and has been approved by the two people who have seen it (who were actually very impressed...) being Thomas and Arthur.
So bored as shit (still disabled) I decided as I couldnt make it to Tom's place right now 'cos Im spastic I decided that I would at least do 'something' to pass the time.
Now this fucker is going to run from this (off an inverter) which is out of a spot scrubber (dust buster thinger) 18,000 RPM, yeah baby !
Now, after seeing that thing crank Tom and Art seemed very impressed. Even more so when I showed them my design and how it would all work. (and they agreed that indeed it would work, though like me had no idea how the results would pan out.. But that's all a part of the fun ;D )
So I decided today that it was time to clean up my charger (super, turbo? you decide !.. Bascally my booster) and paint it.
So the first step was prep work. First I fired up my pretend dremel and grinded off the horrid serial numbers and also a couple of dings in the body.
Then I masked the front and back ends of the charger and cleaned them with degreaser. Obviously I wasnt as worried about the bottom half as it's gonna be covered anyways, but I did want it 'clean'

Both from bottom. Now remember kids, prep is 90% of the jobby !
Now anybody who has painted knows that the best way to paint a 3d item (IE - not flat) is to hang it. So here you can see the hung charger pre paint.

And all you need to do is grab the wire high up and twist, and you can get around it easy
Time to ready for flight in my star wars space ship... Opps, wrong day ;D OK so it was really time to mask up and put on goggles so I didnt end up with paint all over the lenses of my glasses, or for those who have good eyes not end up with paint on your eyeballs (trust me kids, it's not a nice experience...) Be safe, look like a twat !
Round one, prime time !
Round two, base color. For this I chose baby blue. I have had this fucking can of Rusto kicking around for five years, I bought them to paint a BMX and had one spare. Finally I decided to use it here just to get rid of it ;D
So basecoat down -
And then to primer the bottom, ooer -
Then clear the body -
And finish painting the bottom

And here is what will keep an eye on my battery whilst I am boosting.

You do realize that chargers/boost devices are left raw for a reason right?
Paint is an insulator and removes the inherent cooling properties of the alloy chassis.

yeah but thats a turbo charger, not an electric one.
Check it, TK's unit.. I wouldnt have painted it otherwise

BTW Errin, update on the other side of this..
What you were saying about alt draw and stuff.. I have decided to still go with the 110v motor on the 2000w inverter but I am going to use a cap between my 12v battery and the inverter
Probly a 1 farad, because the charger will only operate for around 4-6 seconds at a time. Hopefully that will allieviate some of the draw on the alt as the inverter kicks in
Thing is I am not overly worried, because I know that people run game consoles and all sorts in their cars for hours at a time and it doesnt make the engine lose power. Sure the VC motor will draw more current through the inverter, but surely not enough for me not to see some kind of power gain through the boost?
I spose thats something I am going to have to suck and see really

Belt drive turbo kit..........
Wouldn't that make it a supercharger?
correct me if I'm wrong but,
Belt = Supercharger
Exhaust gases = Turbo
Honestly if you have something spinning that fast it will generate heat, now you want to force air into your manifold, would you prefer hot air or cool air, the hotter the air is the more likely you are to have pre-combustion issues and pre-ignition from heat instead of spark.

yeah I know thats a bit daft he would call that a turbo.. I mean if its powered from a belt youre spot on, its a SC. If its spun by pressured exhaust gas then it's a TC.
I'm sure the paint wont effect things in honesty. If anything itll protect it from the heat in the engine bay from absorbing heat into the body.. The air filter is likely going to be inside the fender well, well clear of the engine bay, so it'll be drawing in cold air ok

The air temperature issue with turbos is often why a performance turbo vehicle/kit is also equipped with an intercooler.

looks to me like its a home made vortec or pro charger supercharger as the use a turbo style compressor housing

also how are you going to cool that thing
it WILL produce a ton of heat belt or exhaust driven and cause massive detonation!!!!!!! especially since i dont see any oil lubrication lines in the ready built kit you showed. heat bad!!!!!!! will most likley lock up in a few miles anyways

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE video the trials. Still pictures won't capture the entire disintegration with the grace this deserves.

I believe you're kidding and I'm sure you already know this but dyno runs aren't cheap... unless of course Pandy has the hook-ups for that kind of stuff.
Although I have reservations about the concept of electrical forced induction, I'm still interested to see what happens with this project and I have no intention of slandering or putting anyone down for trying something of their own design.

It will be a supercharger. Turbocharger are exhuast gas driven and technically turbochargers are short for turbo-superchargers.

Personally I don't think it would be spinning fast enough once it loaded down to create enough heat to need an IC. The only thing that might need cooling is the electric motor spinning it.

OK. It's not running on gases or a belt, it's running on a belt drive from a motor that has it's own cooling..
Of course there are risks with it much like everything else, but it'll be ran on a bench for an hour at least before it goes anywhere near my engine bay
It's hard to explain just how strong the motor spins or how solid the whole design is. It wouldnt suprise me at all if it is as well thought out as Thomas Knight's, and the guy stays in business somehow !
Infact *IF* this design works it is better than his ESC, because his one needs 3 slave batteries that need to be charged externally, so you get 20-30 seconds before the batteries die which is bumlord.
What you guys don't know is that I have designed/invented quite a few things now and they have all worked as planned. I once built from nothing the world's smallest arcade machine. It used a 7" hantex monitor and had a jamma on a boarded hinge out of the side of the machine. Boards could be plugged in and the controllers removed. It was cool as shit, also had an RGB out so I could plug it into the TV
Oh, I wired the entire Jamma loom myself.

The motor is vented and can run for hours. See shop Vac, those things have brutal motors in them.
Anyone in doubt here watch that ep of Mythbusters where Adam not only gets his lip sucked in by a VC motor with an impellor on but also how it has the power to inflate a hovercraft and then the power to keep it off the ground.
The craft was made from 3/4" ply, measured about 5ft round and had an office chair, metal rudder system AND Adam on it. It worked, kept him well off the ground.
These motors spin really fast and also have the torque in them.
As for cooling the charger? well it'll be nothing but a glorified fan spinning really fast on ceramic bearings. The same ceramic bearings that street lugers use to go down roads @ around 80mph. With the weight that they have on them (let's say a 15olb street luger and the luge itself) they tend to last a while. Spinning with hardly any pressure on them at all shouldnt be too much.
Also remember it will only operate in bursts of around 4-6 seconds, and then shut off. So it will hardly ever be actually spinning around unlike a turbo or belt driven SC.
And that's why I think itll be fine

I do have a hookup, but it still; wont be cheap. However, because the charger system will only run me less than $200 I will be up for paying for 2 dyno runs
I want one run on stock with the charger switched off (another nice thing is I can throw a switch and turn it off completely) and one run with it running to see what I gain from it.
I mean that's gonna be the proof or non proof of any pudding right there

not joking I do want to see Dyno charts ...its not the much money hell on a club's dyno day around here you get 3 pulls fo like $60.00.
