which one?
true story - about 4 months ago we shipped some HP blade servers (15 of them at about 18k EACH) from a customer site in San Francisco back to our office (they wanted to go to a sun platform)
we packed them 5 each in a box with lots of foam bricks to hold them in place.
we get a call from the distribution center in PDX, say the boxes were in too bad of shape to continue being shipped.
we drive there to find a 3 boxes torn apart and crumpled up. (falling out of a truck and rolling down a hill doesn't even begin to describe it....the were just mauled sides torn, cardboard wrinkled the whole way around. the servers were hanging out of 2 of them, (although luckily none were lost). they told us they didn't know what happened but it wasn't their fault.
we are still battling with them about paying for them (13 of them were broken) its looking like HP is going to cover the bill, because UPS isnt budging....

Holy shit I would be irate...
Yeah, I find my parcels get to me in better shape if I use USPS/Canada post than UPS. Ironically the USPS shipments make it here a day or two after UPS, but it costs me less than half if you consider the brokerage that UPS charges.

UPS is also terribel w/ claims...they fight til the bloody end
But since theyve broken many things on my (mostly amsp which can be fixed thank god) I've found a way to cheat them.
First you submitt an offer to replace the item at a really really high cost...they say we need more evidence ect...so then you give them the cost to repair it. You'll get your money faster then a tawian hooker drops her panties, as soon as they see the lower cost.

I hate brown.
I was to receive a package, my neighbor came up and handed me a little yellow sticky saying last attempt was made, which was the first I had heard. Neighbor said they saw it on the ground in front of their door. I call and get the run around after 3 hours I get a a call back, we will have the driver re-attempt delivery, I specify to not bother unless it is after 5 as the note I found was 9am. They say OK. Next day get home, note on door says delivery attempted 9am..............I didn't think that was the same as after 5? so I call........Finally I just have it redirected to my work.
I have another package on it's way at the same time as this is going on, I come home from work and have a sticky note saying first attempt made 10am, I write on the note "re-attempt after 5". get home the next day note is gone new note in place "final attempt made"....WTF. I call UPS and spend 2 hours ranting, finally I suggest they just drop the package at the UPS store 1 block from my house, they can't do this fro one reason or another, so I suggest I'll meet that driver when he shows up there a little before 6, they say great we'll switch the package between trucks. I am sitting there the next evening for 15 minutes and UPS truck shows I stop thet driver and ask about my shipment.......I get a dumb look, he calls the hub, 20 minutes later he gets a response, It looks like your package is on the other truck still and he has attempted delivery today. I go home yellow note on door which was not there when I left. Yellow note says "I was here at 5:07pm to deliver, you weren't". I call UPS again and let them know I have a prick for a driver and where the hell is my stuff? after a few calls back and forth somebody in the distribution center offered to bring it by on their way home because they only live a few blocks away.
I spent a total of 9 hours on the phone over 2 shipments and wasted 6 summer evenings which I could have been doing better things, would it be to hard to assume a residential address may not have somebody there during the day and possibly be a good idea to attempt those later in the day? I will never use UPS again especially since the item I had redirected to my work was not signed or verified in any way and was just verified by the number on the sticky note, essentially anybody could have taken this from my door and redirected a $300 item to anywhere USA, and I would have suffered the loss.
UPS can lock their doors and I wouldn't care, because I will never use them again if there is any way I can avoid it.

Interesting. I heard years ago (10 years) that they were easy to get a claims though. I made a claim in 99 it went through very easily. I have made 2 claims since, they have been hard to get through, one did & one didn't. The item has to be properly boxed, A box inside of a box with packaging material. The one that went through was difficult to win.
The one I did lose, it wasn't packaged correctly and I knew that, but I added all kinds of packaging to help it along. I was denied but UPS took my items & packaging, returned them to seller. I never got them back. It took me 10 month to hunt down the seller to get my $200 back (The A-hole changed his forum handle to hide from me)

I swear, its almost always cheaper to send usps anyhow, unless its over their size limits..
however, it does seem to vary by location. I dont think theres any question of UPS's shittiness in the PNW though. But once in awhile we'd get requests to ship things through them over usps, based on other peoples opposite experiences, specifically in the midwest..
