PHPBB3 Phorum

There's a new major revision of our forum software out. It offers a ton of new features (many of which we have here already through modifications), and some other stuff. So I have set up a smaller copy of the database (removed some sections), and converted it to run on the new software in order to test it out.

I would like you guys to let me know what you think. Things like the look can be changed, so I am more looking for comments on the overall flow and feel.

http://phpbb3.phoenixphorum.com

If there is enough positive response, I will eventually convert the full forum to use the new software. I would have to take the board down for about a day to do this completely.

Check here for the list of added features:

It's too bright!!!!

My eyes don't start hurting for atleast 3 hours with this version.

Can we better protect the site from JOMA and other ass-hats?

Turn your brightness down

It does offer much more moderation control through much easier to use control panels. You can report posts for moderation, give warnings, probations, and full out bans. MUCH more flexible, and way more secure.

Check out the [ Moderator Control Panel ] in the top left 8)

There are also different levels of moderators... global moderators, partial moderators, queue moderators. Management of them for me is also way easier, plus it logs all moderation actions, so I can keep tabs on you. Muwahahaha!

that's pretty i slick, i like moderator tools quite a bit, they would be lots easier to use, and people could flag posts/topics for me to lay my unbridled rage upon.

and the approve posts for certain members would kick ass

I like the layout here better, but I'm sure that can be changed or I'll just have to get used to it. I would say go for it! Anything that makes it easier on you and the mods I'm all for!

BTW, are there more smilies??

its looks pretty sleek and i luv that brushed-aluminium finish type background color and offers tonnes of new features too... looks great

just a suggestion tom, if ur planning in having that list of welcome in multiple languages in the final product.... do put in " Selamat Datang" and " Vanekam" if possible. That covers many parts of Asia. :D

Seems like the text is easier to read. The look is just a matter of getting used to. The forum topic headers(audio, cars, etc.) are a bit small.

One problem I do see is that some of the avatars aren't as clear. Like Pedi and twisted. I wouldn't want to mess them up!

That's because it's upscaling them... I think.

The new forum code is very picky about not breaking the HTML tables.

If you post a huge picture in a thread, you have to scroll horizontally to read all the text on the page... it's really annoying. Or one person has an externally hosted avatar, which is enormous, and skews the page as well. The new code will make all attached images scrollable, or if you click on them, they will appear full-size in situ, without causing horizontal text scrolling.

For example: http://phpbb3.phoenixphorum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=878

From the looks of it it rescales all externally hosted avatars to 125x125 (forum maximum size), to keep them from being bigger than that. Unfortunately it also keeps them from being smaller as well, and it screws up the aspect ratio. I will see if I can find a preference to disable that. If not, I will disable externally hosted URLS, and boost the filesize of internally hosted ones. Then you can all reupload your boobie avatars, and they should display in the correct size.

So was it just me or does that forum load a bit faster?

I know I have not had enough coffee yet, but It did appear to me that the code may be a bit more streamlined and renders quicker, or is it just running on a smaller DB that causes that?

Itchy, it's only a test for now. Not all the stuff has been copied over. Tom just wants to get a feel for what we all think first!
