High speed jinx with a turbo

LOL Ive still not given up :D

What I didnt talk about was the turbo is nearly finished, and, thus far a complete success..

A few weeks ago I machined the front and rear ceramic bearings into the turbo housing. I have the shaft now and it rides in the bearings...

All I need to do to finish that is get a thread drilled into the cetner to bolt the impellor on and its compete..

Still, I did a function test where I fitted the shaft (minus the impellor and top half of the centrifuge) and ran my 20,000 RPM motor in a 2-1 ratio with 2 plastic gear cogs onto the shaft.

It span at full whack for over 10 mins before the plastic gears shot into shards and stripped. But, the impellor shaft was still perfectly set and had developed no play, and the bearings were not even hot.

I did realise however that gearing or belts wouldnt last on that kind of setup, its simply too fast for any kind of plastic to be involved.

So, I decided to instead mount the motor off the back of the turbo directly connected into the impellor shaft, this will eliminate anything complicated.

I will be stuck @ 20,000 rpms but I still think that itll give me between 1 and 2 pounds of boost.

Not only that, but itll cost me nothing to get it conected to the car and ran from the mains. The simple test for the first stage is this -

Connect it into the cold air induction, set the revs on the car to 3000 and then throw the switch with it plugged into the mains.. if the revs climb I am generating boost. If the revs dip? Im not, simple.

Then try it at more or less revs, taking down any gains or losses (this is important because I will then know the roll off point and where and where not to have it spinning).

Here is the motor, its quite a beast and has more than enough torque to spin up not only the shaft but also the impellor (I weighed the shaft and impellor then bolted lumps of metal to the motor to see how it got on, it created no noticable lag :D )

Tomorrow I will have the impellor on, and the assmebly of the front end all together. Then its a simple matter of connecting the motor to the back fo the turbo (piece of piss tbh) and locking the shaft onto the motor).

I see fun times ahead :D

I would call this proof of concept, but tbh the concept has already been proven, tried and tested. All I need to do is get the impellor on :D

This is a side shot that shows my concept finished. The turbo housing was milled and the bearings pressed in top and bottom.

Note the gear on there? that was the test proceedure. The drive gear on the motor sharded all over the house :D

Here is the back side. The motors drive shaft will be inserted into a hole in the end of this, and then grub screwed on.

The plastic gear will be gone, and the locking nut tthat torques the shaft into the bearings will also be drilled into, tapped and grubscrewed to keep the shaft in position.
Note the holes drilled and tapped into the back body of the turbo housing. This is where the shim that holds the motor onto the turbo bolts on.

And here is the front end assembly. Bearings in their cup I fabricated.

Note ,the test 'shaft' is a smooth bolt. The other bolt has the end machined off and will be drilled into tomorrow and tapped to bolt the impellor on.

Note the rubber surround on the housing, this is what seals it to the centrifuge when it goes back on, and also stops any back pressure going down the shaft of the turbo. I have not altered this, because it works exactly as I wanted it to.

And, here is a video showing the shaft spinning in the bearings.

Cool huh? :D

Look on the bright side Andy, if it doesn't work out you can always install this:

hahahaha thats great :D

Well my friend fucked up machining the shaft so I gave it to him.. He needs to get a new piece of metal and machine it again, hopefully this time he wont fuck it up lol.
