Grunge fans??

Post by mr tibbs »

Are there any fans of Grunge here? I'm talking Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains type stuff. I'm looking for some more obscure stuff and I have come across something grunge fans might be interested in.

i would certainly appear that way :)

i'm not saying they SUCK, or didnt write good songs. its just i dont think they brought anything new to the game. they saw what nirvana did, and thought "oh, we can sound sorta like that" and jumped on the bandwagon (heehee BAND)

i guess i'm saying...it was decent music...but not innovative or new

I like all mentioned bands so far, but I certainly liked them more when I was an angsty teenager.

Funny you should say that Brian, because Soundgarden formed in '84 and Nirvana really formed in '90. I guess they travelled forward in time to copy Nirvana ;)

Honestly, I think they evolved very much in parallel.

I wouldn't say Nirvana broke down the Grunge gate, granted, they were at thr forefront with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but the other bands listed were putting out singles at the same time too.

I think each band AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pumpkins brought their own unique sound to the scene but Nirvana had more of the teen angst thing down.

Actually Nirvana and Soundgarden were signed to the same label in the late 80's/early 90's. I just happened to find some of the very first tracks that were recorded by both of these bands. Soundgarden IMO did not follow Nirvana, but they were both influenced by the same bands (AKA Mudhoney, Green River, Skin Yard). If you guys are interested (and someone can walk me through the process) I would love to throw up my new find for all to listen to. It's pretty raw and some of the tracks make you kinda go WTF??!!, but it's pretty cool IMO.

Here's how the story goes as I understand it. Back in the day, before there was a Grunge genera, everything that didn't fit into main stream "Rock" was labeled as "Indie Rock". Well, there was this little record label in a place called Seattle that started to sign a bunch of these "Indie Rock" bands to a one album (or usually an EP) to help them get started. Now remember, these were "Indie" bands back then so it was almost an anything goes type of deal. Well, years later they had helped such bands as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, and the list just goes on and on. To me it seems like this record label was the entity that started "Grunge". There name is Sub Pop and to this day they are still around, still signing "Indie" bands. Now they are helping bands out like Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, what I would call true Indie rock bands. Kinda cool huh??!!

Now, please don't take all of that as fact. I might have messed up some of the smaller facts because I was up late, late last night reading all of this. I found it to be quite interesting!!

So anyways, about the music I found, well there are a couple of compilation CD's (rather 7" vinyls converted to CD's) out there by this label. The two I have are Sub Pop 200, and The Grunge years - the Sub Pop compilation. They are raw as hell and have some pretty big names on them now, but at the time these guys were nobody's! I think it's cool as hell. Is anyone interested?? BTW, I did get these off of torrents so the quality is only so so, but that might be because they were originally recorded on vinyl.

BTW, quick side note. The first time Nirvana was ever recorded was by Sub Pop and it was distributed on a 7" vinyl and limited to a run of 500. Take a look on ebay what that EP fetches now! Linky

Today's "Indie" rock isn't very independent, although I suppose that depends on your definition of independent.

Edit: What I believe is the newest Sub Pop compilation "Sub Pop 300" was distributed in a fairly recent version of the Spin magazine, I think.

Edit 2: Another cool "indy" label is Matador Records. They have some artists that touch on grunge, but they certainly aren't a grunge label by any stretch of the imagination.

Yep, Sub Pop is still around and still has some pretty big names. Hell Mudhoney has never left the label because they never wanted to go big! They had their shots and were comfortable staying right where they were. They also had L7, Babes in Toyland, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Afghan Whigs, the list just seems to go on and on...

Ya know, I'm on a few car audio web sites and I never really hear people talk about the music they like to listen to. I mean hell, isn't that why we spend all of this cash in car audio, to listen to the music we love??!!

As far as this particular music goes, I'm simply amazed at how connected all of the people from the grunge era are. AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, hell the list goes on and on. All of these bands can be connected usually in more than one way. It's too cool to me, I wish this kinda stuff would happen around here (yeah right).

Anywho, if someone want to walk me through it I would love to post it up here.

Chris Cornell was instrumental in the grunge movement for sure. Remember that little recording label I was talking about earlier? Guess who got the two owners of that little label together, yep Chris Cornell. And Temple of the Dog, there is an interesting story. Temple of the Dog was never meant to be a permanent band, it was actually a tribute band to the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone. The two remaining band mates of Mother Love Bone got together with a few friends from Soundgarden and decided to make the tribute album. They brought in a few other friends (one of which was a then unknown Eddie Vedder) to round out the lineup. After the album was made Soundgarden went back and did their thing and the rest of the guys decided to get together and try to make an album. They call themselves Pearl Jam, you might have heard of them.

As far as I know Rage is back together. Zach is as looney as ever, but I think they are getting along at least long enough to make another album. I know they did something at the democratic national convention, but I'm not sure what.

Mother Love Bone is playing a reunion show this Friday in Portland. First time in 20 years. It hasn't been that long, has it?
