Hmm.. If the gear was/is hot then he's actually going pretty far to try and cover it I'd say.

he sounds too ignorant of the equipment for the cost of it initially.. I suppose there are some very stupid people out there, but it does seem odd. The fact that he keeps referring you to the shop makes me think of the old shop scam where they sell you stuff, and then have their buddies go rip you off.
But honestly, if it was shady, he probably wouldve dropped off the earth when you called him on it, rather than try to cover his tracks.
