I was offered a job (in my field) that I am greatly debating. the problem was, it was offered at 10,000 below average for the entry level. I know it is still more that I am making now, but I was highly dissapointed by the final number. Plus the vacation time is nothing to be proud of. i was hoping for at leat 3000 over what was offered (the bottom 10% average.) i do not know what to do. I would be leaving the lady (3 1/2 hour distance) for somewhere that I may struggle again to live.
What do you guys think? Should i take it? I just keep weighing the pro's/cons in my head, and I think the biggest problem is me being at the 4% income level as the rest of people starting.

I specifically took a job with lower pay, which I would enjoy, instead of one with higher pay that I would hate.
I could have done software development in the oil industry. They would have paid me $60k CAD starting wage (fresh out of school!). But then I would be maintaining spreadsheet software for graphing oil trends. I would be sitting in a dry cubicle with a bunch of boring old farts, and a 10 year old computer. Really boring stuff.
I found my current job, making cellular websites, selling labels content (ringtones, games, videos, etc), billing the consumers, etc. It's a lot more fun, I work on the bleeding edge, and most of my coworkers are young. But I only started at $41k.
Since I like the job, I do very well here, and the management has given me several raises over the 3 years I've been here (now at ~$52k). I am still not making the $60k I would have gotten at the Oil & Gas company. However, O&G is a fickle field to be in, constantly booming and falling. My friend, who worked at the O&G company all this time, has told me about how they have to keep laying people off, hiring new people, then laying them off again, as the money comes and goes.
So in the end, I still have a job, and I like my job, but I don't get paid heavily out the ass for it. Now the lady factor is of course important as well. I don't think I could leave Wendy for any job. I can't really offer advice on that one.

Not sure if your position is affected by the economy, but I would base your decision on stability right now. Do you have seniority at your current job? That will go a long way if layoffs are a future possibility at the new position.
My old neighbor, who I've gotten to be really good friends with, moved from PA to Wisconsin for a new position and better life in a company seemingly insulated from the economic swings. He just called me last week and told me they let him go and now he's looking to uproot his family again to find work somewhere else.
I may be a bit pessimistic because I've been out of work for 4 months. I'm at the point were I'll take just about anything that has some 'job security'.

well, this position has stability (contracted designer for 5 years), and the one Im currently at is not doing well. However, I am really really bothered by the offer. Basically what it came down to was $37.5k yr, which I will still have to remove taxes and all the standard stuff. With school loans, car insurance, and rent, I am not going to be living too well. The average for my degree was roughly $48k, so i think i am just really disappointed. I guess it sucks knowing that I have to take something just because its all there is...

, but I am starting to go a little nuts, Ive worked full time for close to 18-20 yrs straight, I took the layoff on my own terms though, I was making 55-60 k a year but I wasnt being challenged anymore, I was also at the top of the ladder with no more rungs to climb, Im struggling a little but I did this for the better of my family, one step back, four ahead.I have seriously been thinking about taking something that pays under the table though, due to boredom
Just remember joyride, there is ALWAYS opportunity to be had, you just gotta keep your eye out for it and it will all fall into place.

well, I threw them an offer, and they came back with something a little better. it still isnt a ton, but it is only about 1.5k under the new coroflot design survey. Looks like design jobs have taken a hit this year. Needless to say, I took the job and will be moving to Dr. Fosgates area. im gonna have to track him down to help with some intalls.
