What browser are you using?

Post by gkitching »

And why?

I have problems with Internet Explorer. And have been too lazy to switch from Netscape. I have the time now and no more excuses so ...

FF3.08

http://download.mozilla.org/?product=fi ... lang=en-US

Try adding on mouse gestures and Adblock plus ....

Why? cos it's fast and extendable. It's also standard at work.

Safari and Firefox.

I wouldn't use Safari on Windows though, I'd just get Firefox instead.

You could also check out Opera, a lot of people like that one.

Thanks for the link Brett!

I never heard of Opera. What's it's specialty?

even faster than firefox. There's also an opera mini for phones and opera for phones, too, but normal opera on phones also costs money. Mini is free and very good.

I don't find Gecko to be all that fast of a rendering engine. FF needs to avoid getting all bloaty. Extensions are great, however. It's just a bit much sometimes when someone has 30 of them.

Opera and Safari 4 beta scream. I hear Chrome is fast too, I just haven't used it yet.

chrome sends too much info to google. As if they don't already know enough....

we test with all of these and a couple more. Firefox has a bunch of extensions for me including various dictionaries, Remove it Permanently and lots of search engines.

Just curious....what kind of problems are you having? It may be more of a problem than you think.

Virus....spyware....malware.....something like that rather than the browser....?

Not saying that using a different one won't necessarily help....But you could have a bigger problem on your hands....

More operation problems then anything else. I hate all the pop-ups, ads, shit opening I didn't want opening. I can turn java off with Netscape and never figured out how to on IE.

But since you mention it, what are the good anti-spyware programs?

I run FF as well. It is rare that I get any pop ups, and it is much more secure than IE, and much faster as well.

It is starting to get a bit bloated now, but I will probably keep it around as long as my favorite extension "mile wide back" keeps getting updated. The mile wide extension turns the whole left side of the window into a back button, left click back, right click forward. Bitch is, when I have to use a different browser I click the left side of the screen about elvenbilionty times before I realize why the back button isn't working...

:D

Good Anti-Spyware? get noscript, too. Practice with it and, though it's kind of annoying for about an hour, you get used to it and get real surprised when you actually see adverts :D

I'm biased, but..... www.f-secure.com - IS2009 is pretty good and has a free thirty day trial.

For me it's not about which browser...I've been a techie in the industry for some time.

I stillllll PREFER IE...I have FF, and google chrome as well. And use them both...on occasion. But for the most part...I dont get popups....or unwanted stuff opening for the MOST part...

But I prefer IE not because of anything in particular except that most pages are made for the layout of IE. I like some of the features in Opera, google chrome, and FF.
Now which one is more or less secure?! Most people say IE. However yes that may be true...but does not mean that FF or any other browser is SAFER. There are vulnerabilities in ALL browsers. It's how you protect yourself and where you browse. Browse for porn? or download copywritten material.....etc...you are BOUND for trouble....
Most of you know I have perused the NSF stuff...and guess what....I don't get pop ups....I dont get any major infections other than the random cookies that you get from any AVERAGE site...even going to ebay will give you something....
Anyway practice SAFE browsing....and it really doesn't matter which browser you use.
Thats why I asked what were the symptoms. If you have them...which I now know you do....it doesn't matter if you use FF or anything else...you ARE infected.
FF might handle the infection differently...and as well as any other browser in the world. But you will still remain infected.

That being said...I suggest:

Malwarebytes
Super Anti Spyware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Avast
Hijackthis

Try those for starters....

Stay away from the rest. (right now....there are some others that are fine... but these will be all you need for now...)

You may also need these, but can cause damage to your system depending on what infections and what problems are ailing your machine....so have these on standby...
Smitfraudfix.exe
Combofix.exe
Sdfix.exe

Run the hijackthis and you can paste the logfile it creates here...and I can help you from there...or PM me...if you paste it here, others MIGHT be able to help you.

I am FRICKIN Awesome at virus and spyware removal.
Also BELIEVE this....or not....I only run two programs myself....and RARELY...maybe once every other week or two...

Malwarebytes and superantispyware...thats it...I dont even run Avast or any others....jusst because I am VERY confident in my browsing...and my security...Grant it its not fullproof, but I have yet to be hit with any MAJOR infection other than a couple cookies....and such. no browser popups or ads other than standard fanfare that don't come with infections.
(Knock on wood) hehe....
Anyway having been in the industry...(I almost went to work for Symantec) because they were semi Local (40 min drive).
But they hired from inside the company instead...so sux to be me! hehe.

Anyway sokay... just post your log and we can go from there.

as you might or might not know, I also work in the industry.
The guys in the labs were recommending Malwarebytes.

If you have a real issue, try also one of the many Linux Rescue CDs; Windoze can't always fix something if the file's in use.

WOW! Thanks for all the info and links! I will load those programs and run the hijackthis afterwards and post the results. I'm almost afraid .. hehe .. while I don't knowingly do any copyright pirating or anything like that .. ummm .. I have been known to browse for porn on occasion. You know, for educational purposes and all. .. hehe

Do you agree it's time to replace the Netscape browser?

Oh that reminds me, are you guys ready for the Conficker?

You know, Windows has a pretty decent anti-spyware program already on it called Windows Defender. It's free, runs in real time and is constantly updated
