Norwegian PG M-series install starting up(need some input)

Post by RoboX »

I would like to start this topic with greetings to all from a new site member.

To introduce myself, my name is Robin, I'm from Norway, I'm 23 and I have been into cars since i was 16. I have an education in industrial low voltage electrical systems and many many hours on the internet trying to get some stereo knowledge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last spring i installed my first sq system consisting of the p88rs up front with active crossovers all round. My Route 66 powering a 6,5" Rockford Power component set and my M44 powering a couple of Xmax 10" subs in sealed enclosures.

This sounded beutifull and was the best sounding system i ever installed, even the dealer who i bought the fronts off had never heard the rockford set sound this good, and this dealer does custom installs..

but as all good things must come to an end: one evening i was stupid enough to let my brother borrow the car and dispite my warnings of not to exceed level 45 on my HU at all cost(which all the gains were set at) he cranked it to 62 and boom, no more subs and my M44 started to get some problems.

Luckily enough the route66 came through without a scratch, i would probably have killed him if he had killed that. The RF set also lived through, but i never got the really good sound from it again.

The M44 has started to go a little up and down in volume from time to time, and it doesn't sound nearly as good as it did sadly.

Today i have a nice mess of equipment in the car, everything driven active from my HU, the p88rs and powered by the halfbroken M44 and a new RF T10001bd. I have the same Rockford Power comp set up front as before, but powered off of the M44 instead of the route66 and in the back i have a couple of pioneer tsw3001d4 subs in a spl box(fart box) which is no good on music. Loud as hell, but sounds like shit!!

I will be doing this install with an interchangeable subbox and a big amp to play with at db drags. This is why the electrics in the car is so oversized for the amplifiers i'm installing permanently and also why i do certain things that way in this install, to stay in my "weightclass" in the competition.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My car is a 94 vw golf wagon with a modification or two.
Image
btw - the picture is taken when it rolled out of the spray booth, so it is not all together in the picture, no engine or system in the back. This is the real ground clearance:
Image

The system i'm going to install will be consisting of this:
HU - Pioneer P88RS(believe it's called premier p880rs in the states)
Front speakers - Boston Acoustics Pro Series
Subwoofers - ?
Amplifiers - PG M-series
Install acc from Installbay, Stinger, Tsunami and of course some PG

This is "The Plan" ATM.
- Finish sound dampening the rest of the car.
- Finish up my electrical upgrades to the car, better description later in the topic.
- Make new door cards to both front doors to hold 2 x Boston Acoustics Pro Series 6.4LF(4 total) in sealed enclosures @ 4 litres each and properly aimed.
- Make dash and A pillar modifications to properly aim and mount 1x Boston Acoustics Pro Series 4.4LF and a matching tweeter(undecided as of now) each side.
- Rework the "trunk"(wagon) for the new equipment.

As you can see i have some holes in my plan, and i could use some help with the choice of equipment to use and installation of these.

I was planning on doing cap replacements and general repairs(if any) on both my PG's before i install this again.

For powering the speakers i have been thinking of this.
Running the M44 on the tweeters(undecided) and the 4.4LF's with active crossovers from HU.
Buying one M50 for the 6.4LF's with active crossovers from the HU
Buying one M100 for the subs i haven't decided on yet, with low pass from the amp(or passive??)
Maybe even buy a M25 for rear fill just to have the whole series.. :D

The electrics are pretty much done, but i need a HO alternator and i want an AGM battery(Kinetik HC2400) instead of the Optima Yellowtop i have now. This is not a priority ATM, but it will be fixed later.
To the Yellowtop i have connected two runs of 0 gauge cable on both + and - to Tsunami battery posts, fused with 300A each of a Tsunami fuseblock, so should be in the clear on that. The runs go a little past the back seat where i will be installing a distribution station with a 1F cap i have lying around and fuses for each amp.

The sound dampening is on the way, but not nearly done. I have done the floor in the trunk with 1 layer of butyl(vibrationdamping material), but i will also be covering them up with a sound barrier. the front doors are also covered in butyl, but i dont have the sound barrier mounted there either just yet. The rest of the floor and the roof will be covered this summer, it is simply too cold to do it now, the butyl wont stick to the metal in this temperature. We have had -30C some days this month and rarely over -10C so its not good to do in that temperature..

Sorry about the gutwrenchingly long post.. Any thoughts?

Thank you. :) I have been snooping around a little at this forum before, but never registered. Seem like a lot of good people and information on here.

I'm at work right now and will be for the next week or so, but when i get back home pictures will not be a problem.

And again thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to the Phorum. I know we all want to see pics of the install, and I promise that if you ask a question, someone will give an answer.

You are definitly in the right place if you love the PG.

I'm interested in how you like the headunit. I'm considering buying the Premier P880rs, and would love the input on how it performs.

First of all I want to say... your english is amazing! You probably write better than I do!

Second... that is one cool Golf! It's a good thing you have nice roads in Norway, because your bumper would be smashed if you drove it for a day here!

With your low voltage electrical experience, we will be able to get your M44 back into perfect shape. Resident phorumers 1moreamp and Eric D have a lot of experience in repairing these amps. Also, the M44's are suuuper easy to work on, thanks to good old fashioned through-hole design. You will want to do some work on your route 66 as well! The capacitors will be very old by now, so you should replace them before they leak enough to short out. This should be a 30 minute job for you ;)

If you plan on an M100 for the subs, I would suggest a pair of RSD12D's, or even a single RSD Comp 12D2! That seems like it would be the perfect power range for them. The RSD subwoofers have amazing sound quality, and can play super deep while remaining nice and tight up high.

Very nice to have you on our Phorum. Hope you decide to stick around 8)

PS: What is it with you Volkswagen owners and using undersized tires, in order to have your sidewalls sitting at an angle? I only ever see that on little Golfs, Jettas and Rabbits. Seems pretty unsafe to me

Thank you. Here in Norway there are very little people who are into oldschool PG any more sadly, so when i say my system is powered with 4x40 watts they laugh till i turn it up. I love that :D

The p88rs is great! It has a lot of possibilities and sounds awesome. Here in Norway many of the real competitors regard it as the closest you can get to ODR quality at the money. The only real thing i don't like is that it skips a little at LOUD volumes, but i think that is because of the installation in combination with the port tuning in my car. It pretty much only skips above 143db on the termlab. Never on bumpy roads or anything like that.

Hmmm... There are atleast a couple of us on the west-coast of Norway  , so you better watch out for us, hehe...

I consider myself as a pure Old-School PG addict, only that I am MS-series kinda guy, not M-series..

Welcome to the forum, this is really a good place to be for us who loves the sound of PG.

Maybe we will meet sometime this year? I hope to finish my "Krank Amp'n Wagen" project this year, and I bet you will drool over some of the Nice PG-stuff I have... Even though it is not M-series... As you know, PG-items are rare in Norway, but thanks to Ebay and some helpful guys in here - I have got many nice items to my home...
Selling your Ti9 mids? PM me, please..

I also need a DD10...

Thank you my good sir! But I need to say one thing, The roads here in Norway are seriously overrated, once you get away from the main roads they turn to shit for the most part. I have already damaged the bumper a couple of times, but luckily enough i have worked a little with resin and glass so i can repair it myself.

I hope the gurus here has some tips on the M44, it's sad to have such a good amp in so bad condition. I know my way around a soldering iron, but i'm not really that informed on the internal construction of an amp, but hopefully some of the guru's on here can help with that. Will do an overhaul on the internals of all my existing and coming M amps before they are installed again.

Are the RSD's good for rock, metal and such? I have to say i have never heard of these subs here in Norway, but i'm sure it's just because i don't have any PG dealers in my area. The local cars usually run the equipment being offered locally and that means mostly rockford in the better cars..

As i said it seems there are good people on here, so i will try to stick around. :D

The reason for the tyres in my case is that the stretch means i can run wider rims, but still have the thread within the arches, which in turn means that they don't scrub on the arches. Plus naturally it looks cool.

will try to get some pics when the install gets going, but at the moment i'm away at work for a week or so.

btw, I like the look on your car. In my taste carbon hoods are always a good look in combination with contrast colours. :D

Good to see there are others from Norway on here too. I have noticed a couple of PG guys on the Norwegian forums, but not all that many out in the open anyways.

Myself i got a little hooked on the M-series when i got a mint route 66 as a gift from my uncle. Have only had it installed for maybe 4 months, the rest of the time i have had it on display in my bedroom.

I must say i love loud bass, so in time i will be looking into getting one of the amps in your signature to "play" with in a real SQL install. So cannot say i'm a pure M-series addict. Just starting out with that. :)

Most of my friends have installs, but few of them really care what makes the sound as long as it's there. So it would be cool to meet up with some other people that are really into audio in time, i love to talk about cars and car audio. Would be cool to have a look(drool) at the equipment i read is going into your ambulance in time, sorry to say i haven't seen much of the Specials in person before.

I think i will have to test out ebay at some point to get myself some M's, doesn't seem to be much for sale in Norway. I have never bought anything off of ebay before, but i will try to give it a go in time. Really concerned about getting screwed when it is that far away, but have to try sometime, right?!

btw, I think you replied to my post on bilstereoforumet earlier, is that correct?

Yup!

Det var meg det ja. BTW...

Feel free to continue watching my " Das Krank Amp'n Stein" thread, that would be a honour for me.
