wakeups box this evening and another current install

Post by bogart »

Works in progress....wakeups box...almost done. Just got done with the last coat of primer on the lid and will spray tomorrow and airbrush the lid. It back is going to house a reactor with grill across that entire back. two cyclones in the top and a dd9500 in the base. There is a rack being built under to hide wiring and an octane le will rest below this box hanging out about 5 inches....the goal here is to make to box resemble a giant generator...alot of tubes grills and big wire and those amps....this, step one will be in the car this week...its all cut...just need to assemble all of it and paint.

Now the other box with three slots for 12s and 10s is going to house 2 w6s, one w7 and two w0 10s running bandpass. the box will rest right behind the seat in an s10 extra cap. the leather lid is for the top of this and a 5 farad scorpian cap sits above in the small port with the wiring between the seats. The base with the mbs xovers in it is the base and one of the amp racks for the box.....when this is done we will have a glass visor with mb midbass across...four on each side and a total of 37 drivers and 5 amps...there is a second teir not pictured for more jl slash series amps.

This is really just the start of two long term projects with freind here...My car begins when everything shows and these boxes are done....then my summer will be fiberglass....but here are photos of the start....

looks good mang! First class work.

I am a little confused as to where 2 cyclones are going, and the 3 cu ft each they would like to have?

while the 2nd one has all JL subs with 3 different sizes and makes I would think it might be difficult to tune?

the cyclones will be magnet out if the fiberglass top magnets facing one another...hard to tell in pics but there is s 2 degree offset between the two and they have just above 2cuft. It is the bare minimum but they are going to be run on a very narrow bandwidth...see what it does on a generator and make a decision about xover point and slope. My guess is around 28hz....while the dd is tuned high and will be toggled for spl. that box is close to 11 ft cubed and goes from the floor to the roof in the truck. the dd sub will not be seen. he has a ton of midbass in front so the cyclones will run in a somewhat tame fasion boosting the very low frepuencies that that dd sub will never see....it is all in the xovers and getting a solid curve around 200 cycles.

with the other, it started off as 3 12w6s and three 10in w0...then the owner got the w7....in sealed they are all just about right. The 10s really sit right behind the seats at ear level in the install so they will effectively run as mids centered around 200hz and will just get 75rms. The w 7 and the w6s are to be run off seperate amps and each via an audiocontrol deq and an epic 160....live drivers and crossovers along with a ton of separation thru eqs it shouldn't be to bad....then I'll use an rta to get her as close to flat as I can...all amp running full range thru the xover/eq,,,this truck is an outragous install....and it just keeps growing. I am not a fan of the w7...but I'll pick up where the w6s stall out and for sq the w7 will be toggled off....Only really there for eye candy between the seats and pick it up a notch around 40 hz for fun freeway runs and road trips

I'm curious to see how this works out. I've never been a fan of mixing subs, but Steve seems to swear by it

Hehe...well when subs are EQ'ed and crossed over differently...you have LESS cancellation. Now if both subs played the same frequencies etc...yes you can have tons of cancellation.
And the cancellation loss is so minimal if playing different freq's that the gain is much more beneficial.

ttocs- surprises me you question the tuneability of the different jl sizes and versions- its totally about tunability- the challenge is when your expecting different results from the same size and family of driver, be it jl or phoenix gold or xxx- but opinions and questions make the world go round- the s10 is going to be one rocking 4 wheel set of headphones- 6 channels of 30 band equalization in a space that is less than 4ftx4ftx6ft

I understand that with the proper tools that it can be tuned, that was not an issue. I just know that the idea of the install starts is often far from where it ends and I figured that this was one of the cases.

As with steves, it was indeed a the plan from the start to run various subs as both drivers have totally different values in the system. Cyclones run a very very narrow bandwidth and that spectrum is very low. Now with the sq side of the system will sit very well with the cyclones and the ti 9s...but the aplitude is limited with cyclones and the 9s....I've run a cyclone and they are an interesting driver but they, like the 9's require very heavy equaliziation to really get them hmming distortion free.

But they are not an spl driver and all of us over here are into big spl. So we are trying to build systems that will enable us to enjoy the best of both worlds and will make for an interesting compitition season. I have competed the last couple of years spl, and built my systems to do just that....but they sound like shit. Last year the best shop here in town told me that it is impossible to build a system that focuses on both spl and sq compitition....so I am building a couple that will prove them wrong as they sponsor the local spl events.

with daves install, it has changed a few times....this started as a new box for some w3 12s and has run amok...but we are thinking each change through. Both of these systems are very heavily equalized so I am pretty sure that tonal balance won't be an issue....but more importantly, they will be fun and will make people happy.

I will be happy when everyone comes over to help get mine together when these are done as it is gonna be a big ole' bitch to get it all done by summer...

ttoc's traditionally, I agree with you on not running mulitiple models of subs....but, base thoery has kind of gone out the window on these and this is a bit of an experiment....so we'll get a taste of it this week when steves box goes in. Still have a ton of work to do on the rest of the install, but she's coming along

ok...pictures tomorrow...the box has just gotten more paint today and is in the booth drying....will clearcoat before I go to bed...if you saw my shop you would see why there havnt been pics...

When it rains hard half the basement floods and everything has to be shifted...and there is stuff everywhere. Due to revolt in the house over paint and glass in the basement I've had to build a ventilated spray booth in my already limited space. Chaos reigns over here folks..but pics will be forthcoming...half the issue is that I can't lift or really move the box alone and that is unloaded...loaded with both racks I am guessing that it'll weigh in at around 360....ass might just drag a wee bit...
