My latest project : the best I could manage

Post by ydnap »

I'm no picasso. Well, not with this kind of stuff.
The things I have planned for the exterior of the tib are going to make some people stop and take note, but that's for another time.

So my latest project was fitting my new front stage, this consists of 3.5" clif designs mid coaxials and clif 6.5" coaxials.

I know that these speakers won't set the world on fire but I'm no rich man and I am very happy with having them, I count it as a blessing :) much like everything else I have.

Anyways, I noticed on my tib that the stock 6.5" placements are very good, and, Hyundai even went as far as making little plastic pods for them to go in that can be easily sealed (that project is eyes closed stuff and will take no time at all) so placing the 6.5's was a no brainer (even tho I am saving that tol last)
The issue was where to put the 3.5 inch speakers as the tib is hardly spacious.
If it seems I am going into stuff already covered I am posting this on other forums so that people who missed the beginnings knew what I had planned and why.

So I duly noted that there were vents in the doors that were horribly placed as vents (I get nosebleeds from car heat so always have it at my feet and let it rise like heat scientifically does on it's own) so I never used these vents.
But, as horribly placed as they were for heating vents they were fucking perfect for speakers. They face right up at you and are sunk in out of the way. Perfect.

So part one involved removing the duct/vent and putting the speaker in, like this.

Image

This wasnt very hard really. I had to bend the mounting tabs on the speakers to mold into shape on the door but that was easy.

Now. Some on RDtiburon say I should have blocked the vent. But, during this process I noticed that the side window defogger would still work perfectly, and the heat that used to dry poor pandy's nose out and cause nosebleeds would then channel into the door panel. This is ideal because the tib tends to pick up water in there when it pisses down with rain and this will allow the door to get some nice dry warm air in order to keep it dry. Itll also warm the door panels to the touch, bargain :)

Image

So they were in. pretty tidy without rocket science. But I do have passengers in the car alot (girls watching movies) and I know chicks can sometimes be a little clumsy as to touching things they have no idea what they are. I could envision some chick saying "Hey what are these? speakers?" and poking her fingers into them causing damage. So I had to come up with an idea of covering them.
It didnt need to look astounding, the sound is the important part, but I didnt want it looking totally shit.
I racked my brain for a week trying to figure this out and in the end I went and got a set of tin snips, made a template out of card and then set to work cutting and bending the grilles that came with the 6.5 inch speakers that I wont need or use.

End result? not perfect but does the job admirably, keeping my little speakers safe. I even put the badge back on :)

Image

Another angle.
Image

The screws look a bit unsightly buy as I said Im more worried about what damage could come to my speakers if left uncovered :)

nice work.

if you were to use a rsd coax, with its amazing tweet and put in a dedicated midbass in the lower part, you would have one hell of a front stage and system.

Erm, what are they? good question I have totally forgot lol.
Ferk I have lost the manuals too.. Erm, Clif designs (looks for reciept)
PX352T (3.5 inch drivers) and
PX652T (6.5 inch drivers)

Theyre actually (or look like it) component mids, they do have dedicated tweeters with crossovers mounted to the underside of the driver that feeds into the tweets seperately. Im sure if you wanted to you could splice into the wires and use the tweets on a totally different source to the mid.

I know the RSD are probably alot better, but the price on these was sodding excellent ($77.28 for both sets shipped and inc) I would have been hard pushed getting just the RSD 6.5 for that (if even).

These clifs are middle of the road I spose, great part is they do have the swivel tweeters so they have been cunningly aimed toward me. And tbh I would rather have the drivers as one unit (mid and tweet) because the tib is so damn small there isnt really many places I could mount tweeters without breaking the 5-6 inch away from the mid max rule.

However the build qualitty on them is really rather pleasant, the magnets are in the basket and have cool looking vents around them with a nice rubber thing around the outside and on the bottom they have these cool aluminum plates with CD on them.

The bottom line is that they are infinitely better than the shit I had before, and the addition of the 3.5's will boost the upper range of the system up front which I desperately need now. These will all be wired onto the mps2220 which will bring it down to 2 ohm (or possibly slightly less) which is what it is running at now, then the audiobahns in the back will go onto the ZX200 which then gives me full control over each part of the system through the active, so basically when the 6x9s are not needed (IE - Im not thumping enough bass to cause uncontrolled bowel movements) I can leave them off. It's only when I crank the fucker and that sub goes beserk that I really do need something coming from the back. It's not easy covering that kind of bass when you're sitting 4 feet from it lol.

I dont want to say the worst thing that you can say about an install (but Im going to, spank me) but I am getting a bit impatient on this, I need to get it done ASAP because from the spring the exterior of the car is going to undergo some serious fucking hacking and cutting, by the time Im done I will have an extremely unique tib lol... So for right now I must get the inside done and dusted (that fucking gamecube STILL needs to go in before its a relic) and the trunk covering panels and lighting.. Alot basically, and when I think about what I have planned for the exterior (serious mods and shaving) it makes my head spin

Agreed. Check out Brandon's tutorial on making speaker baffles, and try to use some of his work to make some grilles that fit a bit nicer, and look more stock.

With two sets of coaxials in your doors you must have insanely bright treble, especially with the small coaxials aimed at you.

are those 3 1/2" speakers? They cant have very good power handling, and as most "replacement" speakers tend to be, very bright, meant for minimal power.

3.5" handle 75w rms according to the manual.

Treble may be bright but is controllable through the EQ.

That's the sexual harassment panda who lives neath the leaves of the willow tree.

Audiobahns in the back were chosen for their sheer clout, not finesse. The system is a bastard cross between SQ and spl.

Well clif are hardly shit. I mean yeah they aint no morel or dyn but theyre good for what I paid for them and will be alot better than nothing :)

I have to stop spending on the system now and button it up, my car is about to undergo serious bodywork with kameleon flakes, a TVR griffith front end and escort cosworth hood vents. I must get the inside done and dusted and when spring comes around get the outside going :)

by bying those vents... I dont think these are real ones.
A friend of mine has a real Cosworth and his vents are open.
Those on the picture are fully closed...

Those arent the ones I ordered, the ones I ordered were in a ford bag with the cosworth logo and do breathe. The pic of them was crap tho.

Anyways, I have cancelled the paypal payment on them because the guy was a douche and didnt really 'have them in stock'. When I pay over $300 for some feckin vents I want them NOW lol..

So for right now I am going to keep looking :)

Here are the ones I ordered but the bastard doesnt actually hold them in stock.

If rice is european hood vents european side repeaters and british front grilles then we are all in trouble.

All with an ed roth paint job of course. Infact I have done my level best to totally avoid rice and go in the other direction. The rims I have are cloned Hockenheim R rims that were originally made by TSW for VW's. So tbh the rice statement is a little harsh.

I'm even removing the altezza tails and going back to the stock ones (smoked of course)

Thanks for the offer dude but the totally oddest thing happened to me today.

I phoned a mate of mine who is helping me with my mods and the paint and told him of my shitty time with that seller (who basically wants me to give him my money so he can order them and make cash off me) and he said "Andy I have a set of those I ordered them from the UK years ago for my tib and totalled it before I got round to putting them on" which is like a totally freak occurance.

He also has some clear corners for me and a UK 'coupe' badge, so Im going as euro as I can :)
