I got the amp rack covered and finished. It turned out pretty decent.

I FINALLY got to installing my midrange and tweeters. The tweeter mounts turned out better than I imagined. I am able to adjust them on the fly and play around with different angles to see what sounds best to me. The midranges are probably going to bring some criticism as they go against everything you read on driver placement, but it was the only place I could find that didn't require extensive fiberglass work or look obtrusive. With the doors closed, you can barely even tell they are there. After doing some research, it seems that people have had good luck with placing mids in the dash near the windshield as long as the driver is as close as possible to the surface it is reflecting off of. I thought I'd give it a try and see what happens.

I have to say, the ScanSpeak tweeters are the best I've heard. They are very detailed with an extended upper frequency range that makes cymbals shine without being too harsh. The midranges need some EQ work. I seem to be getting some harsh peaks that I haven't addressed with my quick tuning. I'd like to get an RTA on it to find out where I need to focus my efforts on.

After exactly one year of no subwoofers, I finally got around to building a box that fits under my backseat. I had to give up on installing my RsdC 10's. The magnet was a little too deep and the surround too tall to make it easily work. :( I purchased some Sundown SD3 10's as they have a shallower mounting depth and the inverted surround makes them easier to mount close to a surface.

The box fits perfectly under the backseat and I secured it to the seat brackets using pieces of nylon tow strap. It isolates it from the metal frame of the seat brackets as well as prevents it from flying inside the cab in the event of a traffic collision. I used a Neutrik speakon connector as I want this to be easily removable in case I need the room for cargo.

Overall, I am impressed with the Sundown SD3's. They play lower than my RsdC's and blend well with the rest of my speakers. I still have some TA work to do, but I like the sound so far. They don't quite have the impact from kick drums that the RsdC's had, but they're not too far off.

The mids actually play directly into the windows when the doors are shut, so what I get are pure reflections. I know this approach is unorthodox and against everything that people say, but it does sound good. The concept is the same as placing the mids on your dash close to the windshield. I read on DIYmobileaudio that if going this way, to minimize the distance between the driver and the surface it is reflecting off of so you don't get cancellations and comb filtering. The face of the midrange is also facing away from me and is sealed on the backside so I shouldn't be getting any of the original signal, just reflections. It sounds good to me, so I'll stick with it. That is until I roll the window down. :D

Thanks! You really need to install something! Metal music deserves to be played on a great sounding PG system. It's the only way to do it justice.
