To port ...updated with Video

Post by smgreen20 »

I bit the bullet this weekend and in my 3 cubic foot sealed box I put two 3" ports in it 7 1/2" long. Tuned to about 37 Hz. All I have to say is    :metal: :metal:    . WOW!!!!

It's the tightest bass I've personally had get loud and LOW. I haven't heard a system like this since the day I heard Hanks car (local guy that made ponder the thought of porting it). Clean on all types of music. It's one of those things that you really HAVE to be here and hear the before and the now to understand just how   it really is.

I'll get some pics of it soon and I get the local shop to TL it.

FYI- two TREO SSi12.22 wired series/parallel to 2 ohms off of a ZPA0.5

Ive always been partial to ported enclosures. I had a few different setups back in the day in my 85 Daytona Turbo Z hatch back, and I always went back to the ported enclosures, Im not sure if it was the cabin gain I got from the port and hatch, but I always found it cleaner, lower, and the bass note always hit with authority. I also had all of these different enclosures and subs running off an M50 aswell, so the power I was feeding them was always the same.
Ive never heard a set of TREO's either, but from what I hear I would love too. 8)

Yea you'd love to hear a pair of TREOs. LOL

I prefer ported for one reason, the low end extension. I don't listen to a lot, OK hardly any, rap so I'm not after that low end, but more like the bass drops that Korn has in there songs and Chimaira. Sealed can't go that low w/authority.

I went w/sealed for SQ reasons, but I've always been the believer that a ported box can sound just as good as a sealed. I didn't want to do the research and experimentation to find out for my set up. After all, it's on my dime this time around. I emailed Wayne at TREO and that is what he recommended I do, so I went w/it.

Another forum wants me to post a video, so I'll attempt that later today.

Here's the video. Hope the mic does a decent job w/the sound. It's very clean and tight. Just how you like Fuzz.

The subs too. They don't look as if they're moving very much, but I assure you they're beating the hell out of me.

Why?

As soon as my kids got back in it'd look the same as soon as they got out.
I try, but I have kids.

Now that it's getting warmer out, I plan on finishing the box. The current grilles are coming off and I'm going to make my own. I'm going to get some steel rod (1/4" or so) and thread the ends and put nuts on the ends. Drill holes on the inside side (where the sub is, that inside) and put the rod in one end then the other. Center it then tighten the nuts up torwards the outside to put pressure to hold the rods still.

I'm also going to paint the box w/Grey flexstone everywhere it's black. That should cover up the joints that are visable and the imperfections.

Looks good man.....
Does it get as low as you'd hoped? And did ya find that it sounds alittle "loose" in the higher bass notes?
Those tender little burgers with them little, itty-bitty grilled onions that just explode in ya mouth like flavor crystals every time you bite into one.. just makes me want to burn this muthafuka down.... Come on, Pookie, let's burn this muthafuka down!!!

I still had to bring the upper bass down w/the EQ. I think I'm at -2dB at 63 Hz. It goes lower now then the sealed did which is why I went w/it and ported it. Korn has those "notes" that drop down into the 30 Hz range w/authority that the sealed box wouldn't produce very well.

Totally pleased now.
