What is different about in-wall speaker wire that increases the cost ? I'm going to wire up the gym and will be using 2 sets of bookshelf speakers, 6.5 inch mids. Realistically do you see any reason I should run anythign larger than 16 gauge ? I'll be using an older Yamaha stereo amp using both the A/B sets of speakers.

16 gauge is fine up to 300 feet or so....more than that, and I would be more comfortable with 14, but 16 would still work.
As far as price, not sure what exactly you are looking at. You should be able to find CL rated 16 gauge wire for well under $.60/ft. Good luck.

That I do not know. I like stuff with a thicker jacket myself. Makes it easier to run and doesnt knot up on you. Also looks better and easier to make it do what you want.
