Yes, the electric motor is efficient but the actual act of charging a battery is not all that efficient. Electrical power is not free power by any means, have we forgot about the energy crunch the west coast has had for some time now? California already gets a good portion of its power of az, now lets power all their cars electrically and see what happens. Not sure which is the better/worst of the two evils just sayin that I think that electric cars are a small band aid on a big wound....
Well the reasonable alternative is that people switch to a sustainable lifestyle and start biking and using public transportation... but NOT IN MY AMURRICA! The irony is, America used to be just like that, until GM undermined them and sold everyone on car life:

Either way, we're running out of all non-renewable resources at an exponential rate. We might be able to get by with placebos like natural gas or corn ethanol for very short periods of time, though I think we need to use those very limited energy sources to build up the infrastructure for renewable ones. While at the moment electrical cars are not a cure to our resource problem, there is a lot more room to grow there than with combustion engines, and it allows us to shift to new generating technology without requiring new vehicles. Geothermal, solar, wind, tidal... there are a LOT of better ways to generate power.
