San Rafael Swell

Post by mr tibbs »

The wife and I decided to take a quick trip to the Swell this morning. We both needed a get away from work and the house so a trip to the swell sounded like a great idea! It was just what we both needed for a quick get away. The weather was perfect, sun then overcast with a little bit of rain. I can't figure out why we don't go there more often!

Pics were taken here and there. The rest can be found here

Amazing pictures...very nice. Thanks for sharing with us. Sometimes that's what we all need...to get away from culture/society into a place with nothing but nature to offer. Wish the family and I could do that as well....we might head to Turner Falls in Oklahoma this summer (but that place gets crowded), love staying at the old fashion log cabins you can rent out and they make you feel so in-touch with nature (away from the city/work).

just curious what a "swell" is? Is it just the name of a park or is that a local description/name of a land feature? Where is this at?

The San Rafael Swell is a geological area in Utah that many people visit to off road, camp, and hike. Basically a recreational area for fun in eastern Utah. There is a lot of history in the area including ancient petroglyphs and pictographs! Interesting side note, the locals are freaking out because it is rumored that President Obama is looking at this area to declare it a National Monument and it will kill the oil and coal mining in the area.
