PG amp repair?
PG amp repair?
Hi, I wanted to know if this price list for repairs is still correct? Or have something changed?
http://www.phoenixgold.com/2004/flatrate.html
I found a broken Tantrum 1200 available and thought about the seller sending it to PG then back to me (seller lives on the West-coast and I'm on the East, both in Canada, so that I don't pay double for shipping from me and to PG and back).
Any help?
Thank you!

I havnt hear those rumors...but irridisregardless, dont buy that amp
The t1200.1's use a discontinued tri-path chip, and more often the not, that is the problem.
PG, nor anyone else will beable to repair it because those chips are damn near impossable to find

Tripath has a upgrade chip called the 2500 that replaced 4 different units, the 0103 <Tantrum 1200.1 chip> is number 2 or 3 in that old line up. The 2500 is a universal replacement with a minor mod for the wide range of voltage the new chip works with as it replaces 4 different power levels in one chip.
I looked into this contemplating a higher voltage mod to my two to make them more powerful.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The TDA2500 is a two-channel Amplifier Driver IC that uses Tripath's proprietary Digital Power Processing (DPP™) technology. Class-T amplifiers offer both the audio fidelity of Class-AB and the power efficiency of Class-D amplifiers.
The typical application for the TDA2500 is driving low impedance loads for professional and high-end consumer amplifiers. The feedback and voltage range of the TDA2500 can be configured externally unlike previous Tripath modules such as TA0104A. Thus, the TDA2500 is capable of emulating Tripath's previous series of TA0102A, TA0103A, and TA0104A amplifier drivers with the addition of a small number of external components.
Now that won't settle Tripath's lousy portfolio and financial problems, but they are so wide spread someone will most probably buy their technology after chapter 11.
Tripath Files for Protection Under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

There PDF file does not show any package difference on any of there models in that range. I guess their financial conditions are causing them not to update there documents on their site properly. <strange>VW337 wrote:Good call Cecil, however the new chip has a heat riser on it, the foot print is the same but it physically will not fit the T1200.1 chassis because of the riser.
But its their screwed up financial situation that worries me more than anything. I look for long term parts resupply as a big issue on a financially week operation. They could belly out at any time and that would leave a big hole out there of useless amps.
I currently need a 0103A for another 1200.1 I have sitting in my shop. I guess I will call Phil Monday and see if they have any left.
You know on another note, I wonder if the heat riser you spoke about could be removed from the 2500 package, or maybe ground down to rest against the base plate of the 1200 with heat transfer compound in between to extend the package to the base plate for increased heat transfer, Hummm... I need to call them Monday for updated info.
YHX Eerin for your update

We tried using the TDA2500 with the recommended circuit mods as a replacement IC for the TA0103A in the T1200.1 but had problems with the amp kicking into overload protect. It might work but needs some serious engineering time. The TDA2500 is the same package size as the TA0103A (at least the ones we have), I believe the TK2350 has the big heatsinks.1moreamp wrote:Tripath has a upgrade chip called the 2500 that replaced 4 different units, the 0103 <Tantrum 1200.1 chip> is number 2 or 3 in that old line up. BTW- I have heard absolutely nothing about discontinuing the Service Dept.

Thanks Rolandk for the info. Have you guys tried the 0104A as a replacement? It supposedly is the next higher power output level chip, and would seem to be the most likely viable replacement.
We are a Clarion repair center and they used the 0103A chip also in their older 1K D amp. I tried to get one of those chips from them and they said "Sorry, discontinued product, part no longer available. Buy a new amp".
I wish you well in this era of Chinese/Korean made amps

Same thing with the 104A, kicking into overload protect.1moreamp wrote:Thanks Rolandk for the info. Have you guys tried the 0104A as a replacement? It supposedly is the next higher power output level chip, and would seem to be the most likely viable replacement.
