which speakers to use

Post by Thunderdome »

Hey guys need a little help I have 3 sets of speakers to choose from and am not sure which to use so I thought maybe a few opinions might be helpful so please don't hold back

1) phoenix gold ti elite 5 1/4 components

2) focal k2 power 6 1/2 components

3) Kaption audio mpt 6.5 components

the other variable is I have an old set of usd bc3 wave guides that I was thinking about matching with one of the woofers above I also have a ranes 3 way crossover and Alesis eq to go with them for tuning
......so what do ya think.....BTW I like sound quality but at really loud levels but everthing must sound natural

If we're comparing the Canadian retail prices I remember the Elites were $1500.

For me it would be the Elites out of those choices, though I have never heard the Kaptions.

I haven't heard the Kaptions either so I can't comment on them.

Sadly to say,I'd choose the Focals. They reach down a bit lower then the Elites do. My other reason is... I would just rather hold on to/collect the Elites.

I got love for the waveguides, if you have the time alignment capabilites and eq to make them shine. I would say audition both the 6.5's if you can, just rough them in and see which is giving you the better soundstage and overall sound. where are you going to be putting these speakers. factory locations, kicks etc. Matt over at ID told me alot of times he wraps speakers it towels and arranges them in the kicks and listens to the differences in imaging, so maybe give alittle listen and see which speakers create the best image. im sure all of those speakers are going to sound very good, but im sure one set will produce a better soundstage than the others.
We don't need no stinkin' bass boost!

Why not? The Focals aren't anything special in the midbass department either. The Elite tweeter is certainly a lot easier to tame.

the 6.5 " will deliver the mid bass better than most 51/4"
I have used those focal speaker and they have a nice mid bass
the tweeter are the upgraded on's they are bright but not that hard to tame also you have setting on the xover
IMO

true, but its a 5.25 vs a 6.5, i have always had to cross the ti 5's over very high to make them not crackle in protest. 120+ you might have better/different conditions

but thats why i made that suggestion

believe me, i have a personal vendetta against focal drivers and its a lukewarm day in hell when i would pick them out of a lineup

Oh you're right I didnt catch that they were 5.25's. I thought they were all 6.5's.

In that case the only answer is to get some 9M's and rock the 9-5-1's!!!

then they will be for another install as I have no room for the 9,s ( I did think about it ) just to tight in the car I think I,ll try both 6,s in a head to head listening session while the panels are off and then I can really know for sure

There are plenty of good 6" midbasses as well... 5.25's in the kick with 6.5 midbasses in the door would work nicely.

Bfolwer what the deal with you and focal?maybe i missed something
I have listen to allot of speaker from mb (old stuf) jl zx line clarion sss line, alpine dd drive, alpine type r, jbl, ppi, audio art set ups. I have to say they sound warm clean and can handle fast basses not muddy or clouded in sound like some of the others. To date they are one of the best sounding speaker i had owner. yes the tweeter is metal so the are a bit bight but a little grill cloth and they sound great...
let me know what happened?

Brian is an American, therefore irrationally hates anything French.
Unrelated, but youtube released a new update today. Click on the 360p in the bottom right, and select TEXTp. Totally badass. (You need flash 10 for this to work)
